bale of wheat straw + scissors = NEVER AGAIN!!!

i spent hours and hours cutting straw to little pieces so that the mycelia will like me. days even. i enlisted friends until they became enemies. it sucked. i stole some $20 shears. it still took forever. THIS TIME IM USING MACHINES!!! i hope. rental places told me that a wood chipper wouldnt work. it would get jammed. in TMC it says to use either "a **wood chipper**, a garden compost shredder or a power mower". so who is right? maybe stamets never tried using a mower or a chipper because he always had that nifty looking shredder that is in the pictures.... anyone have some advice for how to shred straw easily inexpensively and adequately IF YOU LIVE IN AN APARTMENT? i am calling landscaping places right now asking if they have a compost shredder or the somethign comparable that i can come to them to use for just a moment to shred the bale of straw in my truck and hopefully not get charged more than $20. god i cant wait to move out of the city...

Set skill saw parallel to strings on bale of wheatstraw and cut away. Remove a layer and set a board on top to compress straw and for use as a saw guide. Put in steel sacks for later use.

I hope you did your cutting far away from where you do your cultivation. Cutting up a dusty, moldy bale of straw is a great way to contam your environment.

Or just don't bother shredding. Compression of substrate after spawning makes shredding a lot of work for little benefit. I think shroomgod covered it in his straw tek. Just a grill and some weight.

can you direct to shroomgods tek? Straw is one of the best substrates but takes to long to cut and needs to be cut finely in my fire ants experience. Multch chippers work I hear but havent seen them in action. With a simple search online sears was selling a multcher for $500 dollars and they claim it cuts straw. This may sound expensive but if you have been cutting straw 10 hours a day all week there is no price you could put on machinery.

I dislike laughing at other people's expense, but this thread gave me a good chuckle. The nusrey that my friend shops at will sell you a bale of straw and for a few bucks more will run it through their shredder and bag it as well. Call around and you should be able to find one in your area that will do the same. Saves you time, money, and friends.

I tried that once with some very nice chicago cutlery heavy-duty scissors; they aren't nice anymore Blisters as well. Straw has never worked well for me. I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but I think I got the apartment-shredding part down. A blender about 1/3 full with water, stick a small handful of straw [smaller pieces are better], and pulse on low speed with the top firmly attached. It is a bit messy, but surprisingly productive; very nice small pieces. Still seems to go bad regardless, though. Straw that is shredded by the horse's sphinctor works much better

Chipper/shredders work just fine. I use one. You just have to watch how much straw you shove in at one time, otherwise you can bog the motor. Be sure you have some place to contain the straw, it blows all over hells half acre. It can be messy. Don't try it in your living room.....

Sun Tzu straw has never worked for you? I always thought it was one of the easiest compared to grain. My straw only contamed on me once and it was because I didnt sterilize it. I only pasturized it in the oven and came down with the worst case of green possible. The reason was because there are still wheat seeds in the straw. So now I just throw the bags directly into the sterilizer for 1hr & 30 min. Also a couple of other tricks are that you have to spawn with a shakable grain cakes just take way to long to colonize, and the finer you shred the straw the better(1/4-1/2in). I have seen the largest and most potent shrooms grow off of straw. Personally I like straight straw better then compost(it just seems more reliable).

No, it never worked. Might have used it too wet, though, fuzzy mold every time.

I think somebody asked where shroomgod's straw tek is? Hmmmmm, maybe it's in the grow/find section with all of the other teks? As for other comments, I've never shredded straw in my life. Very small batches I may have cut a few handfuls with some hedge sheers, but never to the point I'd call it shredded by any stretch of the imagination. Compressing it does the same thing as shredding, again covered in shroomgods tek. So far as people having trouble with straw, I don't get it. Did you try shroomgod's tek? Straightforward and never failed unless I had contaminated spawn or did something stupid. Like sterilizing straw and then exposing it to open air. Straw (which is different from hay in that it shouldn't have m/any seeds in it) should never need to be sterilzed. If you do sterilize, you must treat it just like you would grain spawn. The beauty of straw is that once it's only pasteurized, you don't need to be careful with it like grainspawn. No bags, jars, filter discs, polyfill, gloveboxes etc etc. If anybody has specific questions for help with straw, start a post and pm me about it-I'll answer in the thread, I'd be glad to help all I can, but just don't find the time to find all threads.

to everyone that laughed, I HAVE FULL COLONIZATION IN 8 DAYS!!!! nah nah nah!!! pbbbbtttt!!! BEAT TAHT BUDDEY!!!!111@@ no but seriously i was trying to be entertaining. and no i didnt get any blisters the shears had a nice coushy soft pad on them. and now i have straw to last at least a couple months. but when i go back at it again i am gonna get a blower/mulcher with a vacuum bag on it like in rippers tek. everyone talks about the use of an ice chest to pasteurize, but the other great idea in his tek is the blower/mulcher. you can get one for $40 offa ebay or go thieving. you know stealing big things is easier than small things. just walk out with them and try to look like you know what youre doing. youd be amazed how many fully assembled bookcases and $300 mattresses you can drag out of a dept store. not to mention computer supplies etc.
