i have all of my jars sterilized and ready to go. last night while they were cooling, i set up my new 50 W aquarium heater in a glass jar full of water and put it inside of my plastic container that i'm using for my incubation chamber. i wanted to test it out to see if i could get it to a steady 85 degrees for the jars to colonize in. i finally got it to where i wanted it and so i let it go all night to see if it would hold that temperature. i woke up this morning and the whole plastic incubation chamber was so covered in moisture on the inside walls that i couldnt see in. i pulled the lid off a crack and looked at my digital thermometor and i read 85 degrees. so i thought everything woud be fine and dandy and i could inoculate my jars and place them in there when i got home from work. well when i got home from work 10 hours later, the temp still was 85, but the entire bottom of the container was filled with water, the glass jar with the heater in it was only half full and there was a little bit of smoke coming out of the glass. over half of the water was out of the glass and running down the sides of the chamber and dripping from the lid. my themometor was completely drenched, and i was surprised to see it still working. i'm so mad now cause i thought everything was going smooth. can someone please help me out and explain what i did wrong with this incubation chamber and aquarium heater??

I was having alot of problems with evaporation from the jar with the heater and build-up on the walls of the incubator as well so I covered the top of the jars with tin foil wraped tightly around the heater so that i could still use the temp control and held on the rim of the jar with elastic bands and have had no trouble since.

check the wattage on the heater, i'd hate to hear you are using a 200watt heater in a small glass of water- they heat up ALOT! if this is so, drop it down to a 50watt. If that is out of the question make the water dish considerably larger.

This setup works great. It's a Rubbermaid in a same size Rubbermaid with a 50w Tronic submersible heater. The inner Rubbermaid sits on 4 plastic baskets. The water level never goes down. On initial setup it took 2 days of fiddling with the heater to get it to hold at 84' F. Humidity stays about 85%. Water doesn?t condense much at all due to using 2 of the same size tubs. I had a much smaller tub just floating around in the bigger tub at first and had allot of condensation with humidity at 98%. Tub in a tub is the way to go.

Slamdog hit the nail on the head. You are a peice of tinfoil away form everything going smooth again. As you already stated it's a 50w so that's not the problem. A 200w would have done the same thing only faster. The thing about those heaters is the thermostat is located above the heating element so the water has to stay deep enough for it to work right. The smoke coming from the glass was probably steam. If it was really smoke then it got hot enough to crack the glass and you will have to replace the heater but maybe not. You can put the foil over the top and stick the heater down through it, or just take two or three layers and wrap over the top heater and all, tuck it in good everywhere to get the best seal. Sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck.
