A question about pining
    #615555 - 04/22/02 12:39 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Hello:
I have three trays of PESA which I just birthed. Dung mixed with rye with a 50/50+ from Dr Blue.
One tray seems to have colonized fine, nice and even. The other two have patches of colonization at the edges of the tray, some of in on the plastic itself (kind of weird).
Temp is 70-75, RH 92-94.

My question is: Should I remove those two trays, deep scratch them, and let them colonize a bit more, or keep them in the birthing chamber and hope for the best?

They've been in there for three days so far.
Thanks.

Well, if you incubated the casings before fruiting, and noticed some aggressive myclium growth, (like the stuff on the sides), you should have patch cased with more casing. (Adding a light layer of moist casing to the aggressive spots), and then thrown into fruiting once you saw a little more mycleium in the valleys of the layer.
This would have created an evenier colonization. If they were in there for only 3 days, you'll most likely be ok by putting a very thin layre of casing there just to protect a little more local humidity to that myclieum. You will be assured more pins formation with the higher microclimate rH.
You really shouldnt deep scratch unless you have really gnarly overlay. Still, it would just be wise to just let it fruit off the overlay rather than deepscratching and screwing up the hyphal knots.
PESA are very quick colonizers, I remember this. They were hard to keep underneath that casing layer, so I understnad what you're going through. Id reccomend misting more often daily for the next 3-4 days. This will bat down the myclium a little, and hydrate the casing more. Ive heard this might not be the best idea from others, however I have had some sucess with this. Making sure you're not directly sraying on the casings, but rather spraying upwards at least 2 feet above and letting the mist fall gently.
Good luck!

HI, thanks for the answer.
You are saying that I should add a casing layer, and let it colonize, right? To all the trays or just the half assed ones? Do I keep the temp and RH the same?
Thanks,
Boeth
