question about rye berry and hay casing

my friend was making a large hpoo casing with 3 quart jars of rye. before he mixed them i took a sniff and said "whoa buddy, that shit stinks!" he decided to continue leeching but the jars were already open. we decided to mix the rye berries with about 30% hay in a shoe box size container. 4 days after incubation it looks really good. maybe 80% colonized. planning on throwing a casing layer on when the time comes. does this method of casing sound ok? if it produces shrooms, should the be relatively potent? has anyone done this before?

A lot of people use straw. Are you sure it is hay and not straw? I don't think I would really know the difference myself. I believe straw is for animals to sleep on and hay is for animals to eat.
If it is 80% colonized though, it obviously supports mycelial growth. My opinion, which is only based on things I have read in this forum, is that substrate material has a modest effect on potentcy at best. The only "magic" nutrient I have ever really heard of is nitrogen. Lots of nitrogen will NOT make the shrooms super strong, in fact too much will kill them. The shrooms will only produce as much good stuff as there genetics tell them to.
Any plant material is going to have some nitrogen, but I don't think straw is very rich in nitrogen. This only means that the first flush should be good, but further flushes will not be as good as the nitrogen content is depleted...in theory. Maybe the shrooms will not live up to there full potential with straw, but who of us really lives up to their full potential?
Some people say to add worm castings or kelp meal or whatever to boost N, but I don't think I would do that after the fact.
