Lighting
    #614957 - 04/21/02 09:01 PM (15 years, 12 days ago)

I've seen many differing opinions here on lighting (and other questions), so I bought a copy of The Mushroom Cultivator.

Here's what it says about P.C. lighting.
Post Casing... Total darkness.
Primordia Formation... Diffuse natural or exposure for 12 - 16 hours / day of grow-lux type fluorescent light high in blue spectra at the 480 nanometer wavelength.
Cropping... Indirect natural or same as above.

Now, most of the posts here have said a few minutes a day, so thats what I have been doing. Have any of you tried the above and if so how did it work out for you? Any improvment in growth or yeild?

For those of you who haven't read this book, get a copy! There is some very interesting info in it. It's well worth the money.

I just ordered an LED lighting panel.  Very cool (not hot), low power usage, need to conceal in closet.  14 watts for square foot of red and blue LED lighting.

WTF will you do with red and blue leds?

You need cool white light at 6500K colour temperature. Even the leds on the correct colour temperature give a very narrow spectrum of light, so you're better off with CFL:s.

One of the best pin sets I ever received was fruited in the dark while I was away at my ex girlfriends, they had maybe five-ten minutes of light a day and formed a canopy of mushrooms that pushed the lid off a un-latched container.

All this stuff about light and pins is bogus, everything comes down to genetics although I will not argue that you should stimulate nature to the best of your ability the role of light in developing pin sets/mushrooms and different spectrum's has absolutely no role in the amount of fruit bodies that form.

I've seen great pin sets time and time again with minimal lighting, I was only using a night light at one point in time and still did not notice a difference in pin sets. You guys are beating a dead horse but research is always appreciated.

That's absolutely false.  Every qualified/experienced mycologist in the world disagrees with that, and I personally have thousands of side-by-side grows with different frequencies of light that have shown conclusively that certain color temperatures of light stimulate much better pinsets than others.  Don't give bad advice based on a few grows with such an easy as shit species to grow as cubensis.  Even with cubes, some strains flat-out won't fruit without proper lighting.

After a few more years experimenting with various strains, substrains and species, you'll change your mind.

Certain substrains of cubensis develop that will fruit in total darkness, just like the common button mushrooms you find in the grocery stores.

However, most require light to form abundant primordia and to develop full, well formed fruits.  That's a fact.  Light is a secondary pinning trigger, so nobody should think it's the most important facet of growing.  Once you get the other factors down, light can be the deciding factor between a mediocre pinset and a perfect flush, time after time.

After you get pins, light is not needed.
5 minutes of light works as good as 12 hours in most situations.
Even if you get more pins your total weight wont necessarily be higher, just more smaller mushrooms.
