    #6149451 - 10/09/06 10:54 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

You want polyester fibers. They are synthetic and contain no nutritional value. Most that use poly-fill-ed holes in jar lids, pc the Jars with the polyfil in place with a layer of foil over the top, so in essence, it is being sterilized.

i'm using it for the monotub...the bag i actually have says "polyester fiber filler" so i'm assuming it's polyester fibers.

so do i still need to sterilize the polyfill if i'm using a monotub...or can i just pull it straight from the bag?

For monotub setups, I have always added H202 to the poly fill, then sqeezed out the moisture until completley dry before putting in ventilation holes. May not be necessary. But I have never had a problem.

Maybe over kill, I reckon just stuff the holes. Be sensible, be clean but dont be obsessive - its a waste of time.

I agree. I don't sterilize my polyfil, and everything's been going great.

The only real purpose of the polyfill in a monotub is to slow down the air exchange to prevent drying out, which you could just as easily do without polyfill by simply drilling smaller holes. I've always thought the idea that the polyfill filters the air silly, since the crack around the lid is not sealed at all unless you tape it shut, which would make it awfully hard to get to your project.

Fruiting chambers are not, and need not be sterile.

The tubs I use have a lid that clicks shut, sealing it completely.

But, that being said - I still like the idea of covering the holes to stop as mush dust getting in as possible anyway - I just cover the holes with micropore tape.

Edited to include a pic of the said tubs -

I think later on in a casings life filtered air does indeed help prolong a casings productiveness mainly deterring trich but it all depends on local spore loads as many can infect the casing layer (fact). I will say when plenty of FAE's are involved incidence of contams goes down considerably! Thats why full-auto rocks (cool mists)!!!
