Vote on my Casing layer.
    #6149000 - 10/09/06 01:23 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Alright there's a lot of contention between these 2 types of casing material so you guys vote on what I do with my jars that are about to be crumbled to case in 2-3 days.I have all this stuff around already so it was next to impossible for me to choose. They're all cubes done in pf tek cause I'm a growing noob, and it seemed to be a given to get a harvest of at least some for printing and well that other obvious reason :crazy2:.
So what should it be?
You may choose only one

If you're an absolute noob, just go with the miracle grow MC. It's pre-mixed, pre-balanced, and probably good enough to use right out of the bag. The less steps you have to do, the less you can mess up.

I voted for other , as in NONE . I've spent the last year doing comparisons of cased and uncased substrates and I'm coming to the decision that it doesn't really make that much of a difference with cubes . Especially if you only go two flushes .

If you're looking for simplicity with casings, then go with a standard peat based potting medium. Simply pasteurize the material for an hour and use once cooled. Don't get any easier. And you certainly don't achieve great results with cubensis un-cased, as you would with a cased substrate if you know what you're doing.

I beg to differ . I've gotten just as big of flushes cased or un cased .

I'm not seeing that much difference with cubes . That is with bulk subs and not cakes or such .

I disagree. You've got a mighty large spot there that isn't providing fruit bodies. Why?

No need to answer, I know why.

Hi HC...So you dont even bother casing?
I have a few 1 quart rye berry jars almost colonized with amazons...Can I just dump them in a ceramic bowl and apply to fruiting conditions?

Thx.

Wow...what would you do if you were a noob like me with 4-1 quart rye jars almost colonized?
I have a Martha type setup (4 tier greenhouse)
-ultrasonic
-cool mist

Sorry to bother you...but you seem pro.

Thx.

I'd spawn them to pasteurized horse manure at a rate of 1:15. 1 quart or spawn to 15 quarts of pasteurized horse manure and then left alone for 2 weeks to colonize. See my "Simple Casing Technique" at Topia. http://forums.mycotopia.net/showthread.php?t=13444

Pics make someone seem like a pro , lol ?

I have a 4 tier green house also

And as I've said . I've spawned over 1,000 pounds of poo so far this year , and I've noticed that a casing layer doesn't really make that much of a difference in yield , to me , cased or uncased with cubes . Casing is optional , with bulk subs .

A 4 tier greenhouse? lol! That's funny. Cubensis don't need a greenhouse, nor any other artificial enviroments at that. These were sitting on my floor in the great wide open. Nodda as far as artificial enviroments are concerned. I don't want to ruffle feathers here, but cubensis mushrooms are extremely simple to cultivate without greenhouses exc. In fact, I can cultivate cubensis in my sleep.

If they're so simple , why do they need a casing layer ? They don't need a greenhouse are any other artificial conditions , but they need a casing layer .

Because a casing layer provides a micro-climate on the surface of the substrate. It's basic cultivation really.

I understand basic cultivation . I have to ask where that spawn ratio of 15 to 1 came from ? First time I've ever heard of one that high .
