Outdoor homemade grow logs or dead tree tek?

What if I took a sponge or old rotten log sterilized it then soaked it with nutrients. To do this I would have to grind up brown rice, millet, rye etc to make a solution that this sponge or log would soak in for a few days. After soaking the sponge or log its time to add spores to it.As the spores grow the nutrient solution can be added to this sponge or log by poring it thru a tube a string that will carry the solutin to all areas of the grow sponge or log.Is it possible to do this on a dead log in the woods maybee a tree stump also. The idea is you controll how much the mushrooms eat in different envoirments and save a bunch of time by adding needed nutirents & other things without having to play around with the bed or cake. Would this work? any advice? tips? -Thanks-

are you speaking of a specific mushroom species? well if you see oyster growing abundntly and have a truck well then your in business. suprised few people talk about it. stack and wait. Also, they are indicators to the morel when your oysters begin to fruit in spring it near time to pick morels. Observation is simple and enlightning - Bacon sicnarf

no, the log will contaminate, also grain flours aren't soluble.

is there a threshold? How decayed is too decayed? It kills me to cut down live healthy trees. There's got to be a better way. I don't have any experience growing outdoors but i want to learn. How can we not use decaying trees and use them as woodchips? Can't we sterilize them after we turn them into woodchips?
