Casing ingredients? Help me please!
    #6143096 - 10/07/06 01:19 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I can only find perlite, verm and peat moss. Can I use a combo of these things to make my casing with? Cannot find crushed oyster shell and where do I find coir at? Also, when I PC everything for the casing layer in jars...do I need to puncture holes in the lid? Thanks for any info! These jars are ready to birth!!!

If you cant find a PH buffer you should probably avoid using peat for your casing. Just use straight verm. If you want some coir, hit up the pet stores, check the reptile section. Remember though coir is a substrate/spawn. Its not for casing. You can use it for a casing, but its a terrible idea when there are far better alternatives. Check for oyster shells in the bird section of the pet store, if you have a "big box" pet store, check there.

edit to say: Pasteurize your casing material in the oven. Don't sterilize it in your PC.

If you can find peat and verm then finding lime should be no problem. It comes in a smaller bag in the same place you found the peat and verm. Usually labled "hydrated garden lime" or something similar.

Spicy, I'm glad to hear you had good results. I'm only using gypsum for a buffer (not too great on its own, need that hydro lime). Your story of success leads me to believe that my casings will kick ass too!

Mrsme, make sure that if you go lime hunting you don't end up buying dolomitic lime. That shit is high in magnesium and will kill your mushies.

Finding lime locally can be a real problem in areas that have naturally alkaline soil. If you live in an area with acidic soil, lime is at every hardware and garden center. If you can't find it, you can order hydrated garden lime at doitbest.com

Peat/verm makes an excellent casing material. Coir is a great substrate, so you could spawn your grain or brf jars to the coir, then when the coir is fully colonized, case it with the peat/verm.

We don't lime the casing for the mushroom mycelium. Nearly all fungi prefer a ph of around 6. We use lime to get a ph of 8 to 8.5 because mushroom mycelium can tolerate that high ph, but mold spores such as trichoderma and cobweb have a hard time getting a foothold in a high ph environment.

Good luck Mrs and keep searching. You'll find the answers you need.

ok... so let me get this straight:

Coir for the bottom layer and peat/verm after the crumbled cakes are spread?  Or do I wait until myc is a little more developed in the case to put the top layer on?

I am going to go check out the pet stores around here and see what I can find.  Thanks again for all of your help....5 thumbs up for everyone!

I might try my next casing layer without the lime after reading Spicy and RR's posts. I didn't know that fungi prefer ph of 6. Hopefully I don't contaminate it.

dont put a bottom layer of anything

coir is a substrate, which can be spawned to

crumble your cakes, add the casing layer, then incubate
some people let the mycelium heal before adding the casing
i never did, its not completely necessary

patch it then fruit it
