so I'm kicking tyvek to the curb...
    #6133466 - 10/04/06 06:31 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Ever since I moved on to making my own jars about 2 years ago I being the cheap bastard that I am always used the free tyvek the post office supplied for use as filters.

I'm not sure what caused it but I finally broke down and got a bag of polyfil. People this shit is like $1.75 for a GIANT bag. Polyfil cut my prep time for the jars way down. It is so much easier to stuff a little polyfil and inject throught the hole rather than messing around cutting the disks out and taping over the injection holes.

Anyway just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone usin the tyvek I'm glad I FINALLY made the switch haha

I tried tyvek for a while and hated it, went back to polyfil and love it. Tyvek is more trouble then its worth.

if tyvek is too hard then you must be doing it wrong. what is your method?

tho im a noob i also used both and found it to be very easy.  Also it eliminates the need to cover injection holes with micro pore tape...because the poly fil takes care of that.  Prep on each jar is about 5 minutes if that.  And like Dihnekis said overkill on contam filters is never a bad thing. ::):

I love tyvek. I never cut circles out, I just cut squares and the rings screw over the excess tyvek and I trim off some that sticks out, it takes about 10 seconds per jar or less. I've always had contam problems with polyfill. Everyone unto there own though, some things work for some and don't for others.

Polyfill would be in the arts and crafts section.

But it really is inferior to Tyvek in terms of filtration, but will work.

If you really want to stop being a cheap bastard, then buy filter disks.

Yeah in the crafts section its cheap as heck!!.. a bag bigger than your average bed pillow cost like $1.75... no more snooping around the USPS! I couldnt belive how much of it there is for so little cash..

The point here is if it will work, and its cheaper then why the heck not use it

I have a big bag of filter disk's that i have yet to use. Dont feel like doing my inoc in a glove box. Anyone have any experience with lifing up the filter disk to noc in a clean room instead of a box?

Thanks,
Shpongled

i would think that it would actually be LESS effective cutting circles, not to mention inhibit my natural laziness. the only time i use poly in a jar is for an LC.

I think you should use BOTH together. This is why:

If you do tyvek only (above cap), its hard to find the innoc hole since its covered by the tyvek..making you have to guess where it is...you dont want that.

If you do tyvek BELOW the cap, after you inocc, you have to cover the hole, giving no FAE. (even if you cover it with micropore tape that little hole isnt enough for FAE) In this case you would have to make a seperate hole for FAE only, and you could either micropore it or just polyfil anyway...

If you use ONLY polyfil, your jar contents will touch it from underneath, making a mess of your polyfil and risking contam. Also makes the hole rust up all nasty.

This is where tyvek works well with polyfil. Tyvek under the cap will stop the polyfil from touching jar contents. Make one innoc hole on the side and a 1/4 inch hole in middle for polyfil. Inooc, then cover hole with regular tape. Let polyfil hole do all the FAE.

Unless you use so much filtration that FAE is compromised. Using both is unnecessary.

IMO polyfil + tyvek is plenty of FAE...its about the same as having just tyvek since the polyfil hole is so big.

Now DOUBLE tyvek I can see being a problem with FAE...but ive never tried that.

Just followed http://www.shroomery.org/9030/Docs-Wild-Bird-Seed-Tek and got jars colonizing in 2 days.

I like tyvek for jars, and poly for tubs.

Cut tyvek squares and put them between the lid and the ring of a canning jar. Easy. Obviously, the lid needs a 1" hole in it. To inoculate, crack the lid and sneak the needle in there. Then you can write on the tyvek.

Injection holes are not necessary if you keep your work area relatively clean.
