ready to birth?
    #6129076 - 10/03/06 03:59 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I have 12 pf cakes. Some of them have too high a water content but almost half seem pretty close to being fully colonized. The most colonized jars aren't completely white at the bottom but pretty close. I'm wondering if they are ready to birth. Take a look at my pics and tell me what you think.

no they are not ready, uncolonized substrate is an invite for contams. If you absolutely must birth soon I would cut off the oncolonized parts and case them since youre cakes will be mangled.Have you flipped the jars and tapped them yet?

did you use a dry verm barrier? if you did then the top isn't supposed to be colonized. just scrape off the dry verm when you birth.

ya the uncolonized part at the top of the one pick is just the dry verm layer. I know a lot of the jars pictured are obviously not colonized but how about the jars in the close up pics? Also I turned the cakes upside down but I'm not familiar with the "tapping" procedure. Can anyone clarify this for me?

thanks a lot!

just tap em opn the floor or any hard surface to make the cake slide down the jar onto the lid to give the myc some room to colonize. It can also help pull some fresh air into the jar.
