Learning to Meditate

Hi, I've just recently began reading literature on some of the more traditional forms of meditation.
I have a background in psychedelics, and I have a good deal of love and respect for my mind. I am mentally very confident, and I normally have very little fear. I have spent a good deal of time exploring my mind by myself (learning introspection) both on and off drugs.
I have had a number of very powerful experiences (a salvia breakthrough, level 5 shroom trip, enlightenment of absolute depression) and I have been comfortable with all of them. I have learned to self induce powerful psychedelic states without the aid of drugs. (approximately level 3)
In my quest to better understand my mind I have began reading up on meditation. (among other things)
Here's my problem- whenever I attempt to meditate, I quickly develop a high intensity visual space. (albeit mostly empty of imagery, just bright colour)
This is a minor distraction, however when I open my eyes they hurt, and will not focus. This does not happen with psychedelics or any of my self learned introspection.
Has anyone here experienced similar effects? Does anyone have any suggestions or advice?
Thanks a lot guys!

being relaxed and non-reactive during your practice is important closed eyes should be lightly closed. you may leave your eyes slightly opened if this makes less pressure. the concentration has to be relaxed and relaxing, so there is no need to clench anything. everything is about light a light touch a light attitude and light heart release continue

If you wouldn't mind sharing, I'd like to know how you do this.

Glad you asked.
I found out by accident the first time while I was re-exploring ideas that I had discussed earlier on psychedelics. It felt like some form of associativity.
After some experimentation, I found it was more the nature of the thoughts than the exact thoughts. To be more specific, thoughts which make me recognize the power of thought itself bring about the state most easily.
The first time it occurred I was discussing the possibility of the dissolution of space through technology- technology has expanded to the point that if the circumstances were right- everyone could be in the same room. (every person could be given a camera, and, conceptually a digital system could be implemented placing a room in virtual reality, where EVERY person could be displayed... clearly there would be some details about things like the human eye [not everyone could be recognized at once] and the scope of the physical system itself)
I immediately felt feelings which were unmistakably similar to those I had experienced on LSA, and as I continued to explore the ideas (eyes closed, my girlfriend attentively listening, myself aware of her receptiveness and the flow of my thoughts into her mind) the feeling increased. I had clear feelings of spatial distortion, and noticeable visuals.
This was only about 4 or 5 days after my most recent trip, but even so.
The second occasion was during contemplation of our existential reality, I looked at an object, recognized it as man made, and suddenly recognized I was sitting in thought.
My chair had come directly from the minds of humans before me, united with understanding of matter, time, and energy. I recognized that my thoughts were in fact forming the state of the reality around me. This induced similar psychedelic feelings, as well as minor open eye visuals- mostly illumination of objects I was recognizing I was recognizing. Bright, easily visible illumination.
There were in total, about 6 instances.
However on the most recent I began to contemplate ideas of self-sacrifice, and it was just too overwhelming. The ideas were bordering too closely on religion, a subject I am not yet comfortable in. (out of fear of misusing the power it grants you)
Following this I became stuck in the most blissful state of my life, it lasted for hours, and began to make me uneasy. The first negativity I felt that night was very refreshing.
And so, since then I have been studying the mind more often in a more general sense, I am not seeking power, only to understand myself. I do not want to misuse my gifts and hurt myself or anyone else.
I should also mention I experience psychedelic states through the experiences of others- trip reports make me trip. No other way to describe it. I have only ever experienced minor visuals in this manner however (about level 2).
I have never tried to convey these feelings/techniques to anyone other than my girlfriend before, and only in vague detail. I will be glad to share all that I learn in these realms however, and all I learn in traversing them.
But I want to learn more about the mind, and myself, before I try and increase their power.

When reaching for the deeper levels of meditation, it helps to visualize yourself drifting/moving farther/deeper away from the concious world. Not only is does this help in guaging how far you can go in meditation, but it also helps to guage how far you must travel to return. It is startling for the body to move from a meditative state back to reality instantly. Allow yourself the leisure of traveling back to the point where you will open your eyes in the same sense as traveling back to the surface of the water to take your first breat of fresh air again.

personally in meditation, I do not imagine anything instead I try to help bare attention be bare I try to gently unearth what is already there. to see what is without adding anything.
