birdseed
    #612580 - 04/19/02 01:36 AM (22 years, 9 months ago)

So, up until now I've been using finchseed from petstores, you know, ultra-premium-gourmet stuff with like, 10 kinds of seeds and little bits 'o dried fruit, etc. Today I was in Wal-mart and I saw the seed that hawk reccomends, penningtons. This let to a bit of an epiphany: there's two kinds of finch seed - the stuff you put in your birdfeeder (cheap, only a few kinds of seeds), and the stuff you feed your pet (expensive ultra-mega-gourmet-premuim-fiesta-blend).
So my question is... have any of you compared different types of seed for potency/yield? It'd be nice to get 10 lbs for 5 bux, but will I sacrifice quality in doing so?

i would say go with the penningtons, say you lose a litte...... (worst case) then you could just eat another off of your other mountain of substrate you have because it was so cheap.

I have been raising birds for many years and it is recommended not to feed pet birds outdoor bird seed. It is inferior and I always seem to find it smells stale. I say spend the few extra dollars and get the best you can get. After all these are your pet mushrooms you are talking about and your future stone.

Use tge cheapest birdseed you can find with sunflower seeds. Mix 70-30% with brown rice. Soak over night and then drain and fill jars use tape seal. Black seeds sunflower, thistle, make potency much stronger. I taughty Hawk the birdseed nethod. Finch seed is inessecary BS. Mr.G

Very interesting, Mr G. I have read here in the forums that it is recommended not to use sunflower seeds. You have obviously had success using them. I was planning to experiment with them as I am growing wood eaters and I thought they would be good for them. I will definitely try them now. Thistle is known as very nutritious food for birds.
I am going to experiment with sprouting the seeds before I use them. After all malt is made from sprouted barley. Wheat berries sprout very easily and rye as well as some of the birdseeds and if you get raw shelled sunflower or pumpkin seeds or green lentils from the bulk stores. Soak the seeds overnight in a mason jar with cheesecloth fastened over the mouth with an elastic. Then drain them, rinse them in luke warm water, and spread them around on the insides of the jar. Rinse them every 12 hours. After a couple of days they should sprout. They are ready when the root shows 1/4 inch. Rinse them again and sterilize them. Sprouted wheat has 300 times the vitamine E content as unsprouted, as well as hugely expanded B vitamines and most other nutrients. I believe this is the way to make a more nutritious formula.

Yeah penningtons is the kind my friend uses. No big assed sunflower seeds. Plus they have the shit at every wallmart.

Hey Mr.G- I thought that everybody recommended not using sunflower seeds? I don't know maybe it works better.......
