Shweet news- also something to try for all
    #612427 - 04/18/02 10:28 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Not long ago, I read a post on bacterial contamination. The person had some doomed jars but thought, ' What the hell, I'll just stick em in a bag and leave em by the window' and the mycelium fought off the contam. Well I also had 2 out of 12 jars fall to this type of contam, so I tried what he did, and emptied the PF style jars into a zip lock bag, tossed it up by my window and forgot about it. Its been about 2 weeks since then and as I look tonight, there is no foul stench and the substrate is nearly 100% colonized! The temp by the window is about 67-72 degrees. This is my first time growing, but I think this might be benifitial to someone. Happy Shroomin!

I smelled the lids of the jars (the ones that were colonizing really damn slow) through the innoculation holes and it just reeked. So I took the lid off and wafted some air from the top of the jar, and it smelled just like the discription the FAQ gave me of bacterial contam. Also the insides of the jars looked really slimy.

Yeah, that was my post. Now I rarely give up on bacteria-infested substrate. Glad it worked for you as well.

I KNOW you guys aren't defending/promoting attempts to bring back a contaminated jar. That would be terrible misinformation.

I just watched mycellia devour some unpleasant looking spots in two of my jars. It was certainly a pleasant surprise.

Chang - I know the risks, but I'm just sharing my knowledge. To anyone attempting this just take good jugdement. As so many people say, if you have a bad feeling about it, just don't risk it. Everyone take care.

When you say "by the window", are you talking in direct sunlight or what? I'm sure it's warmer than that by my windows, especially if the blinds are open. And we're talking zero air exchange, am I right?
I toss anything the least bit iffy, but might think twice if people are having some luck with this method. I wouldn't throw a pile of green up there, but I've had a few that just stalled, probably some type of contam, nothing too stinky...it might be worth a try to save some of those. Wish I had seen this 2 days ago. Just tossed 4-5 iffy jars, even though I wasn't sure they had problems.

Well, my window faces the north, so i would have to say indirect light, and at first (for the first 3 days) i just opened and closed the bags. After that i just forgot about it.

I'll keep this in mind and give it a shot next time I have opportunity. Thanks for the tip.
