Getting the most out of cakes.
    #612349 - 04/18/02 10:59 PM (15 years, 7 months ago)

A month or so ago, i went a little crazy and cooked up huge amounts of half pint cakes... i don't even know how many... anyway, i have alot, and it would be a terrible waste not to get the absolute most mileage out of them. i'll case a few, but what i'm interested here is how to get really nice growth from cakes. i plan on dunking, maybe using drinking straw rehydration.... would cold shocking be a good idea? what about milk dunking? what works for this? i've seen some really nice growth on cakes... just not mine. what kind of yield can i count on from each one (grams-wise and shrooms-wise) i know that may be one of those "it depends on.... (long list of variables)" but a ballpark figure from people who know would be appreciated. thank you all. also... i've had some cakes in a terrarium now for a week and a half, and they aren't doing anything... what's with that?

i would case them :-) i am not a real big cake guy (never actually did any) and casings are just too easy...... make em deep.....not sure on your gram figures there i think something like 6 or 7 grams per cake dry is a nice number although i am talking out of my ass.

if you dont want to case you can split your cakes in two. doubles your number of cakes which doubles your yield

if you dunk, you should refridgerate them during the dunk, if possible.
that way you also get the cold shock along with the re-hydration.
also, it's a good idea, after dunking, to apply a double-end casing of damp vermiculite [see PF's website for details on double-end casing].
cakes like it really humid, more so than casings, so keep that humidity pegged at near 100%.
if things seem a bit slow, turn up the heat a few degrees, that'll speed things up.
also, cakes when you want to initiate pin set, don't need as much fanning/ventilation as casings. in fact, you want a little co2 build-up, so only fan cakes once a day until pinning is well under way.
as for a milk dunk--
up until now it's been a pretty risky procedure, with a very high loss rate.
it must be done under refridgeration to have any chance of success.
use powdered dry non-fat milk, that way you can mix it up 2x or 3x normal 'strength' and boost the nutritional value.
now here's where i start to get controversial.
lots of folks might start screaming nonsense, but heed my words, i've been around along time and have pioneered several teks now quite popular, including dunking and invitro, as well as running mycotopia for over a year, i know my shit.
anyway, after you've dunked in milk,
prepare a dilute solution of bleach [ordinary household bleach, must contain sodium hypochloride, nothing else] by mixing it 1 cc of bleach to 100 cc's of water.
then submerge that cake for 5 minutes, which will completely disinfect it, killing all bacteria & molds.
rinse well & pop it in the terrarium.

let the flames begin.

"Let the flames begin"  that's pretty funny!
Hey Hippie, the first time I saw your ID I thought that might be
you but figured it wasn't so.
A long time ago (before I found the shroomery) I asked PF
about the "Hippie Tek Invitro" but he wasn't very forthcoming.
If dude has a whole lot of jars, wouldn't you reccomend
putting a few in pint jars for invitro fruiting? Sure would save
some terrarium space.
And what did you think about the cutting your cakes in half
plan? Kinda like saying that if you swap all the quarters in
your pockets for equal value in nickles, your pockets will
rattle better. (but you'll still have the same amount of money)
Anyway, I'll have to give the bleach idea a little more serious
look, and test.
Glad to hear you're still growing good.
I humbly bow to you.

It seems that if you cut the cakes in half you are creating more surface area for the shrooms to grow on. In turn when you crumble the cakes for casing you are again increasing the surface area giving higher yields. Seems logical.

i dunno, doesn't seem all that logical to me.
if i cut an apple in two,
do i get any more apple ?
you might get a bigger 1st flush if you cut them in half, because surface area does play a role. but your total yield for all flushes combined isn't going to double just because you cut a cake in half. if only that were true, we'd all do it every time.
as for invitro, hell yeah, if you got jars collecting dust but no terrarium space, what's wrong with fruiting some invitro ?

When you make a casing, you combine cakes together,
forming a bigger stronger mycelia network. And in my
inexperience, bigger shrooms.
I agree that the more surface area could provide  more
mushrooms but, I doubt that they will be as big. I have a
cake that right now probably has over 50 pins on it. But I
already know that a week from now, they won't all be the
same size anymore. Some will dominate and draw the
nutrients from the cake better, and leave their syblings far
behind.
Just my 2 ccs on the matter.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse but I was standing in line
at lowes with both hands full of verm and thought of this:
What is the purpose of a casing? First you put it in your
casing tray, which covers most of your surface area. Then
you add the casing layer and cover the rest of your surface
area. Then when a little mycelia pops through, you gain just a
little surface area back. My take on it is that the casing protects
the surface from the elements leaving less than 10% of the
mycelia exposed to open air.
So what part, does the amount of surface area, play on
production? Those who don't already know the answer to
question, needs to (especially if it's me).
Just curious.
