My '07 Backpacking Equipment List. I need suggestions.
    #6121975 - 10/01/06 05:54 PM (17 years, 3 months ago)

Alright, so I'm getting my own gear this year, instead of using my dad's equipment, I need my own.

Right now, the only thing I've got is the backpack.

Lowe Alpine Contour 60+10 Hyperlite
This backpack weighs in at less than two Kilos, with its rainfly on, it weighs probably 2kilos exact. i'm going to get the attaching side pockets that Lowe Alpine sells.

The tent I've been looking into:
Mountain hardware Trango 3.1 Tent
It's a 4 season tent that is pretty light compared to some smaller 4 season tents. It weighs in at a heavy 11lb, but it'll fit 3 people comfortably, and the 2nd vestibule is large enough to store 3 packs and the shoes of the people camping in it, when the rainfly is attached.
I was also considering an MSR Wind2 Tent, but I think the Trango will be the best choice.

I'm still not well informed on sleeping bags, this was my choice:
Mountain Hardware Lyell SL -15° Cold Weather Sleeping Bag
Have any of you had any experience with it? I'd like a cold weather bag because even in the 20F rated ones I get the chills at 40F degrees. I'm looking for lightweight, high compression (without loft loss), and warmth.

Backpacking Stove:
The MSR WindPro Stove
Uses compressed canisters, which I prefer over pump, since I've never liked the mechanics of pump fuel, or the thought of an accidental leak. My brother had that happen in his bag once.

Water Filtration:
MSR WaterWorks Ex Microfilter
I love Mountain Safety Research's Equipment. They have good waterpumps too. They're a little on the heavier side, but they pump a lot of water, and have a great filtration system. Water tastes great through it.

I'll be getting a larger pair of hiking boots identical to my current Lowa's. I love them, they're warm and dry and waterproof, but they're a half a size too small...

I've got a set of backpacking pots and pans, and I'll find a cheap medkit that works well.

Any suggestions?

I AGREE IF UR GETTIN A 4 SEASON Tent GO WITH A 3 MAN.....u need more room in the winter for 2

on water pumps i like ones that pump fast over the lightest there is.....you dont want to spend 1/2 an hour gettin water.

the pack....well fit is the most important...i narrowed it down to a few i liked for the features then tried them on and wore them around the store with weight in them..

if your winter camping you have to melt alot of snow and the liquid stoves(pump) just last longer imo but the canisters do light fast and easy

Yeah, I figured through winter it'd be a bad idea to just leave your tent and gear outside all night. Bring it inside, you never know if you'll need equipment, and venturing out into the night air in sub zero climates isn't smart.

The water pump is a high speed pump, I agree. This is both light and has a high flow.

Aren't there more efficient ways to melt large amounts of snow?

My worrise are keeping warm at night. I struggle to sleep well as it is..

New thought occured. I might get a 2 person just to shave down on weight. Cutting down 3lb of weight would be a nice thing, and the outside vestibule is big enough to stack backpacks and equipment in.

maybe try renting one or getting in one at a store with some bags and stuff equal to what u may have.

in the winter you may be stuck in the tent all day long. annie and i both take a 2 man in the summer and a 3 man in the winter, also dont take a water pump in the winter as it will freeze

im not sure how familiar u r with winter packing, so if im tellin u stuff yall ready know sorry

here is a post i made a while back on winter packing...the links at the end are quite good

I live near the sierras, but chances of me doing any heavy snow backpacking is rare. The most I'll get is 0F nights probably, and light to moderate snowfalls (moderate are from unexpected snows).

Most of my winter trips will be over the pass, not near home, the winters are too harsh and I'm not experienced enough.

Like you, I don't mind packing more weight, especially if I'm going to be having kasey come along, but I'm still a small guy. I'm 5'9 (almost) and about 140-145lb, so I need lightweight. And with the vestibules that youc an create with certain tents and their rain tarps, the interior space doesn't need to be all that big, (and I wouldn't complain at all to being nice and cozy in a tent with her anyway...)

Lightweight and size though would be best. But something under 8lb.

I went with a Big Agnes Storm King 0F bag instead.

I'd select all your gear before finding your pack. Take all your stuff into the outfitter with you and see how the load rides.

A leaking gas cannister isn't any fun too

I heard that MSR is working on a flameless gas cannister burner that might come out soon, should work fine in windy conditions

I would, but I've had the backpack for a few years now.
