Coir - Slightly Pungent Smell
    #6115280 - 09/29/06 11:58 AM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Hello,
I'm spawning a PF cake to coir for the first time, and I noticed a slightly pungent smell (not the smell of coir) which doesn't seem to be getting any worse since yesterday. What do you think?
Thanks.

its a bad sign but not necessarily doomed... wait it out a little longer

i've noticed when coir goes south it smells kinda like bananas, only worse.

two tricks with coir:

1) careful with the moisture.  coir will hold more moisture than you should put in there.  too much moisture means slow/stalled colonization, bacteria, and fermentation (one or both of the later would produce a bad smell.)

2) and i guess this goes for any bulk but is true of coir, once you spawn your cake/grain/whatever into it, cover (in a breathable manner, loosely crumpled foil, or a lid with micropore filtered holes), but leave to colonize at room temp.  if you try speeding it up by incubating it in warmer temps, that bacteria/fermentation can happen even quicker.

Thank you. I'll gladly wait rather than toss it.

Now it seems to be colonizing, and my wife says it smells exactly like a dough ready to be baked in the oven. Yeast! Is that good, bad or neither?

Neither. If it colonizes ok, it will be fine. Bulk substrates are not, and should not be sterile.
