Blue mold or no?
    #6114066 - 09/29/06 12:25 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

If I had 2 jars that were fully colonized, but had smaller-than-dime sized blue patches on them, how could I tell whether or not this is actually penicillin mold or a contam? Can I do it by rubbing a q-tip on the (supposed) contam?

Also, if one of my jars was slow to grow to 100%, but had a whitish tint to the bottom/rest of the jar while it was at about 25%, would I be safe in assuming that it's cobweb? The jar's nearly done right now, but I'm not sure whether this is simply slow myc growth or it was contam'd. Keep in mind that the jar continued to colonize.

Thanks.

To the first question, yes, a Q-tip will tell. If a powdery blue colour rubs off, it is mold.

I'm not so sure about the second question... could be, but I can't say for sure without photos.

Blue green patches the size of a dime on a cake in a jar is contamination. Don't birth that cake or you'll spread contaminant spores.

You'll have to post a picture of the second jar for an opinion.
