Would this be a good spot in washington?
    #611198 - 04/17/02 06:55 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Today i found this long and somewhat narrom clear cut going up this long hill, it is a power line clear cut, i has very nice grass and many other posititve features. I was wondering if anyone knew if this would be a good habbitat for any of the local shrooms? it looks great and i hope it is! Thanks

It's possible.
Then again it's possible that you only find a patch of inocybe, and your zealotry forces them down our gullet.. and you spend the next three days sitting on a toilet, shitting brown water, vomitting ,sweating like a pig drooling uncontrolably.

Look, man...
I don't mean any disrepect, newhunter, but this, along with a few of your posts disturbs me.
Asking these kinds of questions is not wise. It lacks substantive descriptions of crucial facts - chances are, if you got an answer to this inquiry, it would be wrong,
and you might go off and get sick (or worse) and end up just another embarrassing stat in the mushrooming community.

Rudimentary questions like this are best answered by reading a good field guide, because there are too many variables involved here... variable you neglect in the formulation of your question.
things like where are you, what kind of habitat are you talking about = trees, animals, cultivation, ... and what species would you be looking for...

I know that you're new to the whole thing... and we all were at one time, so I guess your question really is more like: " where do I start"
Well... you got to get your book, open it and read it. It will give you a solid framework with which to operate... and if it doesn't, then you'd might want to reconsider your choice of hobbies - because being critically obersvant is an essential component to a safe and fruitful mushroom hunting career.

I say all this with love, and sincerely hope that you get the message: Slow Down, and take your time learning what grows in your area, and what kind of habitat you should be looking in.
Then, (and only then) follow your instincts. If an area fits the bill, and you get an notion that you should search it, when the season rolls around, go for it.
Otherwise. Ummmmmm.
I don't know.

matt, so

Hello New Hunter,

I received your payment for one copy of Magic Mushroms of the pacific Northwest by Mushroom John.

Well the good new is is that it is in the mail as of this morning so you should receive it by Friday or Saturday at the latest.

I should mention that the mushroom you should be looking for right now is Psilocybe stuntzii, also known as blue ringers becasue they have a ring around the stem (Remnants of a veil( froim where the cap opened up. Sometimes on a sunny dy that ring will appear blue.

You can check my site at http://mjshroomer.yage.net/species.html for pictures of P. stuntzii in a lawn.

Look in well manicured lawns in public places, around new apartment bulidings and restaurants, nursing homes condo lawns etc, places which have a stead reliable lawn service which constanly ferrtilizes and mows. This i the mushroom which would be starting to grow all ove r right now in some areas of thePNW.

Do not be discouraged. Sooner or later you will find some. I looked for a whole year and a half before I found my first shrooms and I misidentified them. I picked liberty caps (Psilocybe semilanceata) in Oregon based on a photograph of Psilocybe pelliculosa taken from Alexander H. Smith's Field Guide to Western Musrhooms.

Have a shroomy day. Let me know how you like the book.

Mj

ps. it is the oldest selling book on magic mushrooms inthe world published since 1976.

here is an image of P. stuntzii on a lawn by a sidewalk next to a condo in the University Disctrict in Seattle. Photo last spring

This is but one of about twenty lawns around the whole building of one square block.

mj

I have found many Ps. Stuntzii before, They grow all over down town around here, thanks a lot for sending that book. Do they really start growing already, i have read they wont start untill fall. I will go look around for a little bit one of these days. Thanks mattso, i will make sure not to rush to fast into this whole thing, i have just read that many psilocybes like to grow in areas where trees have been cut back and grass has taken over the area so i was just wondering if anyone knew if an area like this would have any chance. Thanks for the concern.

Go check out the clearcut and give us a report. If you take along a digital camera you can post photos of finds and we may be able to help identify. Show in situ and also closeup of gills/stem. When you locate the mother lode I volunteer to help you clean them out.

I went up into the clear cut and found that is was huge is is about 20 feet wide to start with for the first hundred feet, then is gets about 50 feet wide for about 9 miles, pure grassland evenually flattinging out about 5 miles up. I found a few mushrooms, nothing of intres. I found a cool site with a huge patch of some very small shrooms growing out of an anti avalance net. It was pretty cool looking. This spoot is full of large decaying logs. many almost down to dirt. I found a few different kinds growing under a overhanging stump still nothing of intrest though. I will head up there again some other time latter in the year to check it out again. It was a pretty step hike at times!

Psilocybe pelliculosa is a clearcut mushroom which grows by the millions every fall in the PNW.

You won't find any magic shrooms in clearcuts until the OCt-Dec time of the fall/winter months. TThere woill be no psilocybes there until then ane only certain clearcuts which are less than three years old.

And where alder trees are starting to reach a heght of from three to ten feet.

mj

As I said before, the only shrooms now would be the Panaeolus subbalteatus, in manured fields and manure in the south to southeast and in haystacks in the PNW.

Have a shroomy day.

P.s. Did you get my book yet?

mj
