i'm not sure if i did my jars up right or not. first i put my lids on rubberside down, taped w/ electrical tape over holes, then sterilized. took off the tape to inoculate, then put tape back on. don't know if holes need to be covered after innoculation. please help a newbie!

My neighbors pink elephant did jars like that the first time. Amazing that they colonized to considering the environment they were in. They actually didnt show much signs until they were put in an inncubator which was a couple weeks after the fact but they are going strong now so I dont think youll have much of a problem. If you do, get more jars!

so does that mean i should leave the tape on? does air need to get inside the jars via holes? cuz thats the whole point to haveing lids upside down non-seal style, rights? so since i have an obvious seal where i shouldn't does that mean i need to make up for it by taking off the tape over the holes? still confused here.

I was wondering the same thing. My jars have only 1 peice lids and they are screwed on tight with no holes on the top. Should I open them every once in a while to introduce fresh air?

Try the poly-fill tek next time. You can find it at fungifun.org See if that works for you. It basicly has a hole filled with poly-fill for air exchange, and a seperate hole for innoculation. If you remove the tape on your jar, you're leaving your self open for possible contamination depending on how or where your jars are stored.

If you cover the holes with tape, the CO2 can't leak out, and your growth will really slow down.

thanks a ton. i took off the tape and secured them in a dark clean warm spot...on a vacant shelf above my HPS grow light. heat rises and warms the shelf really nicely. every so often i spray disinfectant just to reassure myself. day 3 and no sign of germination...yet!

Day 3? Should take a week or so. Be patient.

ok. moved my jars from the lighted shelf to the top drawer thats under the ballast to my hps light. so now my jars are in a dark room w/ temps around the high 70's. just fixed up some experimental jars w/ wild rice, some w/ whole wheat grains, and a couple w/ barley. any known tests w/ these grains? also trying nomi's grass/leaf substrate. does light exposure to germinating jars stunt/slow the process?

Make sure you keep them in the dark while they are germinating. Otherwise they will start trying to fruit. It's ok to check on them once a day in the light or whatever, just don't leave them in the light.
