other hikers? in the tetons yes, wind rivers no...they r huge!

the rocks are layered with pollen from pine trees, covers the lake,  then the water level drops slowly over the summer creating the layers, yes they look cool imo

Last summer my wife and I honeymooned at Yellowstone & Grand Teton. No multi-day treks, but plenty of fantastic day-hiking. The day which stands out most is the day we took the tram at Jackson Hole to the top of the moutnain, then spent all day hiking back down through Granit Canyon. The wildflowers were in full bloom, we got to see a mama moose and a calf, and we only saw a few other hikers all day long.

Looking forward to the day when we can return and spend several weeks exploering some backcountry.

Northwest WY is really one of the most amazing places in the country IMHO. Heck, maybe the world.

Teton Village

Yellowstone Lower Falls

Grand Teton NP

Go. I swear you will not regret it.

I never knew a thing about WY until I had to come out here for a work project.

Since then I've been to Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Park 3 times. And I'll be trying to come back here every year for the rest of my life.

It really is unforgettable. Get into the parks (Grand Teton & Yellowstone are within half of an hour of each other). Then Camp. Hike. You'll have the time of your life.

Hmmmm, you may have convinced me.

I want to go on a road trip this summer, this is my plan.

Home > North Shore camping for 3 days > Yellowstone/Glacier/Grand Teton > Washington plus Rainbow Gathering > Oregon and Oregon Country Fair > California and Redwoods and Yosemite > Denver > Boulder > Home

It would be amazing if I could actually do this.

I know, it would be unforgettable. All I need now are companions, money, and time off work. I feel like I could get all three, but time off work would be the hardest. I wouldn't want to rush that trip.

Yeah, you're definitely going to need ample time for a trip that epic. I hope you get to do it, bryguy. I would love to hear the stories.

Are you gonna do some tripping out there?

I live here in Wyoming.  If you need any advice on places to go or stay or anything hit me up.

This part of Wyoming (NW) is truly one of the wildest parts of the u.s. outside of alaska.  did you know that the farthest point you can get from a road is found in the absoroka mountains of wyoming?  this is pretty close to a whole ecosystem.  look around the world and you'll see that that is becoming a rare thing in this human world.

Dude, you LIVE in northwest WY?! Lucky effer

I would kill to live there. Who knows, maybe sometime in the future I'll get my wish.

Must be amazing to be able to walk out in your backyard and never know if you're going to see a grizzly bear, moose, wolf, or 500 pound elk. Pretty intensely amazing that area.

I will be sure to let you know. I'm sure I'd bring my 35mm camera too. As far as tripping goes, I don't know, it all depends on who my companions are, and what I have. I wouldn't bring mushrooms because I wouldn't want the risk of getting locked up but acid is easy enough to hide.

Wow, I am really jealous of you living in NW Wyoming. If I do go on my trip I'll get in touch for sure.

don't be too jealous.  I recently hurt myself and am pretty laid up and struggling to be positive through this journey.  But I'd be stoked to point you in the direction of free camping and cool places to check out.  Or whatever.  Do you expect to backback and get away from roads much?  where do you guys live now?

Sorry to hear that nikoD, what happened? I'm in Minnesota. I love backpacking, but it depends on how much time I have, and if I actually go.

I fucked up my back.

I would recommend hiking into the mountains to camp even if it's only for a day or two.  tetons and yellowstone are great, but if you want a tad more solitude check out the wind rivers.

Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks are among the most beautiful places I've ever seen in my life. The creeks above Lake Jenny were great fishing.

We lived in Lander, WY for a while.  That's where we were living when oDin posted the pics.  The Wind Rivers are a different kind of mountains.  Like nikoD said you can really get away from it all.  The Hoback Basin south of Jackson, is pretty crazy isolated as well.  There are so many critters around there, but be VERY bear aware if you are hiking/backpacking anywhere in any of them.  God's Country we Wyomingites call it

Lander is the coolest town in Wyoming.

I'm sad to report that the Hoback Basin is beginning to be developed for natural gas :-(

We're fighting hard to keep this from happening, but with the Wyoming govmnt being as conservative as it is, it is unlikely we will be able to stop it.  This will severely affect the local deer, elk, pronghorn, etc, as well as poison the ground water through the unregulated practice of hydraulic fracturing.
