I went fishing along at a local creek today. I was trying to find deep holes where the big cats hang out. I began to notice LBMs along the trail, which always spark my imagination as to whether any of them might be actives. All of a sudden I noticed one that was orange. I started looking through the underbrush and found more. When I found a mature specimen, I knew I had something. The fishing / shrooming combo works great for me. If I don’t find one, I find the other. After looking at my books I am 99% sure of the ID. I just wanted confirmation before I dig in, and to brag I FOUND CHANTRELLES! Any cooking tips would be much appreciated.
Habit: found in grass and bush at edge of forest.
Cap up to 2” yellow-orange convex becoming Flat and wavy
Stalk 1.5” Yellow, thick
Gills: Attached
Odor: fruit
Bruising: orange brown

Thank for your replies. I'm going back tomorrow and collect as many as I can. I'm really getting hooked on hunting. It' helps me relax. Yon kind of have to be in the right state of mind or, your not likely to find anything.

I hear ya. Nothing like the thrill of the hunt. I often find myself totally zoned out and unable to focus my eyes very well after a day of hunting. I'm not a big mushroom eater mostly I like to get them for my friends but I love to hunt. It is totally relaxing. Even when I don't find anything I don't get mad. It just makes me want to hunt more!!!

You shouldn't pick more than half the mushrooms in any one patch. You need to leave the rest to support the habitat as well as drop spores. If you pick all the fruits over a season, you can easily wipe out a patch forever. RR

That's exactly it bone. I wanted to try to explain the thing that happens to my I eyes but wasn’t sure how. They are actually dilated a little when I get home. Hunting is a high in itself.

Hey Roger, I appreciate what you’re saying. Over collection is detrimental to much wildlife. I do not think this is a real issue with most fungi. I do not understand what you mean by support the habitat. As I understand it, mushrooms are just the fruiting bodies of mycelium and do not nourish it in any way. The most heavily hunted morel spots produce year after year. I don't think IM likely to upset the balance of things to much because I intend keep an eye on the spot ant take specimens when they mature (having a chance to release spores). Chanterelles grow in thick cover and IM unlikely to find half in even 200-300 Sq. Ft. Chanterelles also fruit over a wide season. Who knows conditions may change and the patch might not support mycelium growth next year anyways. Maybe by collecting I will spread spores to viable grow sites.
