Several Mushroom Species (photos!)
    #6109420 - 09/27/06 10:39 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I went hunting on Tuesday at a lake in southeastern Washington, near where I live. I was going mainly for photographic purposes; hoping to get some quality shots of some fungi. I was surprised to see how many different species there were, and how prevelant the fungi were in the area. I was really hoping to spot some Amanita Muscaria, since I'd heard there were some around there, but I never saw any. But I did get some shots of some very interesting mushrooms. Since I'm east of the Cascades, I wasn't expecting to find any active species, although I hear there are some on occasion. So here they are(If anyone can ID any of these, please do).

Two bold looking mushrooms in the foliage

A noticeably sexy specimen, photogenic at that.

I don't know what kind this is, but it's interesting

A mob of mushrooms

A few mushrooms chilling on the bleachers.

A sunset picture I took after I jumped out of my car and locked my keys inside. Was it worth it? The jury is out. A friend with a semi truck came and loaded up my car. What a pain.

Two mushrooms picking on a poisonous-looking little mushroom.

Bird's eye view of our pulchritudinous mushroom. I must mention the beauty of those green, spiney things. They were all over, and sang to me as I walked my mushroom path.

A little bit of mushroom romance

A rather reclusive amanita of some sort.

A cute chap nestled in among the welcoming leaves.

Another scene to look at. The lake. A fish presents us with a cameo of his ripples.

Interspecies dating.

Another utopian sunset

A chantrelle? I wasn't sure, so I didn't pick or eat any of the mushrooms I found.. except for the tasty looking bright colored ones.

Thank you very much. I just added more pics, so take another gander. I have a couple more even, but I am still deeming whether they are worthy.

yeah, that is a chantrelle. It looks a tad bit old, but I bet it's still good. Sometimes they get a little bit tough when they get old. I bet there are more around where you found that one.

I'm not sure that is a chanterelle.  Looks like the gills run down the stalk farther and the color obviously is way off, even for an old chanterelle.  Maybe a clitocybe?  Regardless,  I think it is well worth you having locked your keys in your car so that we can all share that beautiful sunset photo with you.  Really great photos :mrt:

Thanks for the feedback.  I plan to go back and find more mushrooms on the other side of the lake next week maybe.  I will bring extra car keys.  I couldn't help but groan profusely when I realized that I took all of these pictures at ISO 800, which caused a lot of grain on some of the pictures...which wouldn't be that bad except that I like to print out large sized photos, and that detracts from the quality.  But oh well, lots more opportunities as the season has just begun.  In a couple weeks I am going to western Washington to do some hunting and take more pictures.  Hopefully I will find some good ones there, but I will just have to learn where to look, since I haven't hunted there before.  Glad you all are enjoying the photos

Great photos, you ceratainly have an eye for composition! Perhaps next time post them a little bit bigger? That'll make them a lot more powerful IMO!

Kudos!

i found a mushroom that looked just like that thing you thought was a chanterelle. I though the same exact thing as you. I tried to eat it but it tasted disgusting and slimy so i spit it out.

I really did put that pic as my backround so hope that compensates for getting your keys locked in  :happyheart:

Nice.

I agree maybe you should make the images a little bigger next time - either way great pics. Did you pick any of them to try and ID?

I did pick a couple to get a better look at them, but I didn't keep any.  I'm quite a neophyte in non-active identification, so I wasn't prepared to try.  But I did pick a couple to see if they may bruise blue, but alas, the mushroom gods were not smiling upon me quite that much.

Sorry for the size of the photos.  I just get in the habit of posting small pictures online because I do a lot of photography and try to minimize the risk of having someone swipe my pictures, although I realize the risk of that here is really quite minimal.  But if someone has a request to see a certain picture large-size, let me know.

I live in Walla Walla, Washington.  And that lake is Jubilee Lake.  I haven't fished there, but it is supposed to be a great spot.  I heard many a splash and burbling that evening, which caused me to strike myself deftly across the face for forgetting to bring my fishin' pole.  Maybe another time.

I noticed that the only place I found mushrooms was within 20 feet of the lake.  If I ambled elsewhere, they were nowhere to be found...except the log-residing kind.

Great pictures, the moss and the terrian at all look very similar to ones I have here!

Just don't reduce quality of pics so much next time, 800x600 pixels would be ok.
