i use 1/2 pt jars and magic micron filters disks, filled with birdseed. you will be amazed at how fast colonization takes place. use the recipe for pint jars and cut in half. i then put dung in quart jars (about half full) and pressure cook (also with filter disks and lid bands only. then mix colonized birdseed with dung in the quart jars and let colonize. then use 1 and 1/2 quart jars each casing and case with 50/50.
you'll love it!!

side note: when using filter disks and lid bands only i would advise using a incubator to prevent substrate from losing too much moisture.

i don't use the metal lids at all.
when innoculating, you want to unscrew the metal band, using one hand holdthe filter disk in place. the sterilization process will have made the disk form to the shape of the jar. insert syringe through disk and squirt solution. then as you are removing the needle tip, hold another filter disk over the insertion hole, kinda how the doctor holds a cooton ball on your arm as he is pulling the needle out. then screw the band over both filter disks. there is a tek somewhere. i think if you ask "micron" she can direct you to it!
good luck!

one more question-you only incoulate through 1 hole-or through 4 holes?

and do you trim your disks down?
wouldnt that make it harder during incoulation?
and do you lose many jars to contams using the disks this way?

well if you will be using birdseed you now only have to innoculate at one site. remember you have shakable substrate now!
i do not trim my disks because i also use them on quart jars when i spawn my dung with the colonized birdseed.
does what make it harder during innoculation?
and i haven't lost one jar to contams!!
i think with the combination of birdseed, filter disks and lid bands only, and an incubator, my substrate is colonized so fast that contams have no time to take a foothold. now i have lost casings to green mold but that is another story.

It helps to prevent evaporation if you losely wrap tin fiol around the tops of the jars when there in your incubator, another thing I do is keep a small container of water/perlite in the chamber.I have had promblems with evaporation with mmfd, these simple measures fixed the problems,oh yeah I also wrap lids in my preasure cookeer to keep out extra moisture and tirm filter to do the same.
good luck with the filters

i thought you were switching to birdseed, ganjashroom? you do not need rye flour, flax, or verm with birdseed! or are you still going to grow from cakes?

i am-just was gonna add in for extra nutrition-im doing the ralphster44 tek for pans-he uses a verm layer-is this neccesarry with the filter disks?i was gonna use my own substrate though-instead of just birdseed, and spawn to manure-
will it hurt anything?
to add those?
if anything i thought it would just help it out,not hurt it,besides i need to use this rye flour and flax-
maybe ill do some jars of both-see which works better

i don't anything in my jar but birdseed. no added nutrients, no verm layer. it tends to through the water ratio out of wack. other than that i don't know if it actually HURTS anything, i just find it unessesary. simplicity

I used filter disks on PF style 1/2 pint jars. What I did was when I innoculated, I just stuck the needle right through the filter and then put tape over the hole. For the incubator chamber, I put all the jars in a big rubbermaid box, then I just added water until it came up half way on the jars. That way I didn't have to buy a bunch of perlite. Seemed to work fine, I measured the humidy in there and it was between 80-90%.
