*UPDATED*/ *COMPLETED*Trick the woodlovers experiment- An interactive Intervention
    #6107612 - 09/27/06 02:49 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Last year I posted these pictures

here is the link http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/4787013#Post4787013
to the original post for those who didn't see it or don't remember.

In light of the warm and very dry conditions we are having I decided to see if I could get the shoe to fruit faster by bringing it into a controlled environment. So here is how the Experiment works-

I took an ordinary Pyrex baking dish  filled it with hardwood chips that were outside in the shade under a Rhododendron, These chips were in the immediate vicinity of a very nice patch I found last year. LINK

I then added a nice 3'x3' chunk of Cyan myco into the dish. This small chunk was part of a large solid piece of thats about 24" wide and about 60" long the chips are fully colonized waiting for the right temps,IMHO. That area last year produced many shrooms.

I also added the shoe from last year. Before selecting this shoe I carefully inspected the inside of it. It appeared to be myco laden than last year. I did add more chips to it in January and put it under a very shady Rhodie where it sat all summer long.

after putting the wood chips and the myco chunks in the bake dish I poured about 16oz of cold filtered H2O over it all and I set the Dutch clog on top. I then took one of these

and the intervention is underway!

Next I grabbed one of these-
and put it in here- :ooo:
Fruiting chamber- :ooo:

Soooo, From here my idea is to Keep the lid closed and keep it dark in there for about 24hrs. I will control the temps by opening the lid and fanning if needed. I want to drop them to the low to mid forties I'm not really sure I want to  the temps to get into the thirties and and risk shocking the myco by changing the Temps so quick. I really don't know if that would have an adverse effect. I didn't Seal the roaster bag so it will get ventilated when I fan. :poo:
I have successfully grown Cubes many times in the past so the regiment of controlling the variables should not be too dificult.
I planned starting them on 10 hrs of light a day and decreasing it by about 10 min a day. Currently there is about 12hrs between sunrise and sunset. The oven bag and water was to maintain humidity and allow the chips to absorb a little more, and if this does work a little extra H2O will be needed for pin set. I just started this so......
I am asking you the thinkers and tinkerers of the psychedelic world to give some input here.

Will this work?
If you say "no it wont". Why wont it?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated I will consider making changes based on your suggestions if that is the general consensus. I will document and post those changes and the progress and with any luck we will have a shoe full of shrooms.

IHS

I thought I would get some opinions on whats going to happen here by inserting a few polls into this thread.  :ooo:

Please remember your answeres are based on the assumption that all of the parameters set forth in the main post are strictly adhered to.

Good Luck, Man! I tried very similar during the spring when I had some that I colonied over the winter (the spores were from Humboldt County, California -- the coastal cyanescens and the alder chips and sawdust were mail ordered from a reputable supplier in the PNW). I didn't have any luck. I understand that Anno has succeeded. I guess I'll have to wait -- hopefully around Halloween my cousin's friend's dog's hairdresser's backyard bed (Eastern United States) will fruit. It's about 15" by 60", I'd estimate. Totally colonized. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and again -- good luck to you!

24 hours into the intervention there is already a noticeable change. The air temperature in the cooler was 39 when I opened up today at 1:00pm. Last night I added another frozen gallon container of water to the cooler and ice cubes into the bottom of the cooler. The temperature reading of the colonized wood chips in the shoe was 41. I believe the digital thermometer I used to be accurate to + or minus a degree. there was an average of 2 degree difference between air and core temps. This was an average of three readings of each. I am sure the difference was due to the insulating factors of the shoe and wood chips. I now realize that much of the mycelia growth happens in the last days before fruiting. I can already see new growth emerging up from under the chips.

These pictures we taken of the inside of the shoe. Th following picture was taken of the outside of the shoe. 24hrs ago it was not there.

I would like to mention here that I kinda made a mistake not posting a more detailed start picture of the inside of the shoe so as to be able to gage the growth. Oh well. Clicking on the thumbnails will get you a nice close up of the myco. I opened the lid about 1/4 and I am giving it light exposure fom a flourecent bulbI still have plenty of Ice on it. I expect the temps to go up maybe 10 degrees. I'll get a reading before I shut it.

After 10hrs of light the temps were 48 and 48 degrees air an core. I shut her down til 1:00pm today, 29 Sept. I opened her up and I noticed little to no significant new growth. The surface of the wood chips was a little dry and there was now H2O pooled at the bottom of the Pyrex dish. I poured out the excess H2O and misted. The temp was down to 36 and 36. Colder than the day before. I suspect that that is a bit too cold. This is going to take a few days to figure out obviously. Suggestions anyone?

I was hoping to get your views on some concerns of mine thus far with a poll.
The lid is closed for 14+ hrs. How opften should it be fanned?
You may choose 1
After how many days should I raise the night time temps?
You may choose 3

Due to a sudden emergency I had to leave town for a few days and I was unable to continue monitoring and posting on this project. I took the shoe out of the cooler and replaced it in its spot under a Rhododendron bush. That was after four days in the cooler. I was gone for four days on a family emergency. When I came home Look what I found-

Pinning has started in that shoe. There are many other patches in the vicinity of that shoe. At this time I see no other pins any where.
I closing I would have to say that the experiment as a whole was inconclusive. But it is probable that the temps had a big impact on that shoe.
