Opera cancelled to avoid upsetting muslims

"A leading opera house called off a production of Mozart's "Idomeneo" that features the severed head of the Prophet Mohammed, setting off a furious debate Tuesday over Islam, freedom of speech and the role of art...
After its premiere in 2003, the production by Hans Neuenfels drew widespread criticism over a scene in which King Idomeneo presents the severed heads not only of the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon, but also of Mohammed, Jesus and Buddha.
The severed heads are an addition by director Neuenfels to the 225-year-old opera, which was last performed by the company in March 2004."

Sound fimilar? The South Park creators understand this form of censorship.
-------------------- “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

If I add a poo-flinging scene to the opera, and it causes a commotion, does that mean Mozart is being censored?
If Mozart's original opera featured the severed head of Jesus it would have been artistic suicide and he would've been censored smack in the middle of europe.

Mozart at all times tried to tickle the senses and sometimes moved to the edge of decency, but I'm confident he would strongly oppose the scene.

So, the severed heads weren't in the original opera?

Nope! Common sense dictates Mozart couldn't depict the severed head of Jesus (especially not alongside other prophets and avatars) because of blasphemy, he also would know little of buddha, let alone include his head.
But even without common sense: nope, the heads were later written in, as our threadstarter alleges, and Wikipedia already is up to date on:
Quote:
The "Idomeneo" production, directed by Hans Neuenfels, shows King Idomeneo staggering on stage carrying the decapitated heads of Poseidon, Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad; a departure from the libretto and score.
Mozart wrote operas, not religious splatter movies The severed heads is a typical 20th century shocker with an antireligious agenda, it would be unthinkable in the late 1700s, as blasphemous as muslims today might still consider it.

Thanks, I appreciate the Wikipedia article. I figured that it wasn't in the original, using my common sense. I have found, though, that common sense isn't always as sensible as I once thought it was.

You're still missing the point that the opera house people are pussies.
