Mushroom Poisoning Death in MN
    #6105318 - 09/26/06 09:45 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

There has been a death in St Paul, MN, today, of a 10 year old girl who ate Amanita bisporigera.

More information here:

http://www.startribune.com/462/story/702753.html

Just a friendly reminder - eating the wrong mushroom can be fatal.

Happy mushrooming!

Sad to learn of this news. :frown:

Another case where someone picked Amanita mushrooms and fed them to a whole family it seems?

It sounds like the family was originally from Asia ("Public health officials said that the victims might have mistaken the toxic Eastern American Destroying Angel mushroom for a nonpoisonous variety commonly found in Southeast Asia.") and that they must have consumed another type of similar looking Amanita that grew over there before, only to think the one here was the same (but it turned out being a destroying angel)?

RIP (to the girl).

My mom gave me the article when it first happened several days ago saying that I was going to get myself poisoned. A shame that things turned out this way for the girl and her family.

Yeah its that same unfortunate thing of people moving from asia and eating the lookalike. The girl didnt pick the mushrooms her family did. It's totally understandable, they have picked this mushroom all their life, and then see it one day after moving to america.

Whats the worst poisoning that has ever been mentioned on the boards here at the shroomery? (ie the person involved posted) There were those two guys who boiled up green gills, but I havent been in the hunting forum all that long.
Any of noteriety?

Agreed, they should have done research first, St Paul MN is a different place than SouthEast Asia, and the lack of finding out about what your trying to find caused someone their life, too bad, stupid parents.

I heard about this story on the local news last night. The park where the mushrooms were picked is only 3-4 miles from where I live. I visit that park once and a while and have seen these Amanita bisporigera growing there, only I know better not to eat them. I don't see how these mushrooms could be mistaken though; one look at the volva and I automatically know what they are. Nothing else grows around here that comes close to looking like the destroying angel.

Probably the Paddy Straw Mushroom (Volvariella Volvacea) at a guess...

Amatoxin's probably right. I've read of several Amanita poisonings where the victims thought this is what they had. Although those resemble small A. phalloides moreso than destroying angels.

I agree with Amatoxin. Paddy Straw Mushrooms are widely cultivated in southeast Asia, and they are a popular edible. They have an obvious volva, so they would look pretty similar to the uninitiated. The easy way to tell them apart is that they have a pink spore print, where the Amanitas have a white one.

xmush is right also - they look more like A. phalloides than the white species. Most of these particular mistakes occur near San Francisco.

Happy mushrooming!

R.I.P.

Poor kid. Picking shrooms is a dangerous thing! I wouldnt consume anything if I wasnt 100% sure what it was. I dont even eat regular mushrooms, dont like 'em (and they do nothing for ya so there's no point!). Thats why it freaks me out a bit when I see pics on the internet with a caption like "liberty caps" and the pic is of something else! Some fool may use that as a reference and get themselves killed! :crazy2:

A lot of Asians eat Lepiota species which can resemble amanitas at various stages. I think this is a common assertion when they come here and pick what they thoughtr was similar to the ones they pick at home.
