Cure for green mold!
    #6100931 - 09/25/06 11:02 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

This is a story of three casings contaminated to a severe, mild and light degree.

1) The first contaminated with mild amount of green mold (half covered). So, remembering something I read on here once about mold not surviving well outside, I set the casing on the back porch. I figured it for a goner, so I didn't care what happened to it. I set it in the corner under a rug draped over to shield from direct rain. Its been moist lately and a nice temp. After about a week outside the casing is all but free of green.

2) The next casing was severe. It started with a small spot in the corner which was spritzed with bleach and scraped Check out my Bleach-Mutant thread. Bad idea. within two days green covered the whole surface. A reaction to being attacked I assume. Noting my previous success, I set this one out, too.

3) The last casing contamed only in a small spot in the center. removing the spot spread it to three other places, but a few days outside and its free of green.

1) Mold is there but only a small spot.

2) Mold is half gone.

3) Mold is completely gone.

In all cases, the original mycelium has shown new growth.

None of this means that the fruits should be eaten, but if the mold is gone, one might consider it.

I wish I could explain why but I know that things don't often contaminate outdoors.Something about all the fresh air I believe. This is the first I have read of it fixing something that was already contaminated. Some wise shroomery member(I wish I remembered who)once said to throw a piece of bread outside. It wont contaminate even though It would be green in no time if left indoors.

I wouldn't eat the mushrooms that grow from it though. But I am curious if they would be any good or if they would make you sick,I mean it was green mold right, not anything scary like black mold or bacteria.Better not risk it just in case there was something else wrong with it under the green and you couldn't tell but I'm still curious

From what I've read as long as the mold isn't around the mushrooms when they are fruiting you will be fine, and green mold is always pretty safe.

Don't trust me though, wait for someone who isn't just repeating what they heard to confirm that.

That's what the contamination forum is for; the benefit of topics just like this.

i had a lightly contaminated batch on one of my cakes once, cut it out and that was the end of mr. green mould. the mycelium went ahead and did its job and then finally grew mushrooms. I have found though that the potency of the mushrooms was pretty low though. For the effort i put into it i wish i would have just thrown it out though and started fresh, but i was desperate for a few trips so i went ahead with it anyway. Deffinately a learning experience though.

As has been known for many years, attempting to cut out green molds will result in even more contamination. What new growers fail to realize is that the green they see is only the spores that are being released. The trichoderma mycelium is white and may permeate the entire substrate. There is no cutting it out.

Some strains of trichoderma are sunlight sensitive, while others are not. All spores are sunlight sensitive, so placing spores outside in the sunlight will bleach them, making it appear the sun has 'killed' the green mold, when in fact it hasn't.

Using bleach or peroxide to kill green mold is a waste of time. There is nothing that will kill molds and leave your mushroom mycelium alive.

The key is to follow sterile procedures at every step of the way, and if/when green molds are spotted, the substrate must be removed at once and placed outside. Many mold infested projects will recover and fruit if placed into soil in a shady spot.

No. Just sticking a jar outside will do nothing. It is the environment inside the jar (sterile) that makes it susceptible to contamination. Out of the jar and outside the mold will probably die.

What RR said is absolutely true. The center casing above showed only a small green spot in the corner. I consider any project that has any green anywhere to be lost and therefore fair game for experimentation. Removing the mold and treating with bleach did nothing but cover the casing with white bumply mycelium that turned green a few days later.

The only time I've ever "saved" anything from the mean green was a hpoo cake. A small spot appeared and that half of the cake was cut away. The rest fruited fine, but that doesn't mean the fruits weren't affected by the contaminant.

I had a small area of green mold poke through my casing. I sprayed it with H202/water mix and it eliminated the problem. Have had a couple flushes since and the mold hasnt returned

Peroxide doesn't kill trichoderma, nor does bleach or sunlight. The worst you could have had was bruising.

if you have something that kills mold and use it on a cake it will kill the mycelium -- i.e. no growth..  And if you "only use it on the small green spot", well..its not just the small green spot..as RR said thats the only spot that has sporelated..If you see mold the entire area is most likely contaminated as well as the INNER part of the cakes/casing
