I've tried all I can to look up information about casings, but an intelligible definition still eludes me. so: What are they? What do They do? and Why are they so great?

Yeah, there is a lot of information on casings. However, I understand how it is to be new to the hobby, so I will help out as much as I can.
First off, do you know what cakes are? Ok, well Im assuming you do.
A casing is basically a non-nutritional base soil which has good water retaining abilities. A casing is comprised of 3 layers. bottom layer is optional actually, but is used as a water resivoir for the substrate (or cakes). The second layer is the substrate, which are either broken up cakes, or grain spawn, or compost or whatever you want. Then the casing layer on top is the non-nutrional soil which keeps the substrate from drying out and to achieve optimal conditions for fruiting. Casings are either the jiffy mix of coir and verm, or verm and peat, or just plain verm. These casings are moist to field capacity, meaning they are nice and moist.
You incubate your casings for a few days after you created them, so that the mycelium can grow backtogheher from the broken up cakes. 3-4 days pass, you see myclieum coming up from the valleis of your casing layer, time to fruit, bam, you got a bigger yeild in a few weeks.
