Someone told me a way to get around it. First you must re-install windows. Turn automatic updates on but don't go to the windows site to authenticate. Set the updates to download but ask before installing. When asked to install there should be a list. Deselect the authenticator and select the box "don't ask me again". You should now have updates without ever authenticating windows.

I haven't reinstalled windows yet because I'm lazy so I haven't tried it.

Next time turn automatic updates off and just have windows notify you. I do this and whenever I get a notification, I google search to see if anybody is reporting any MS bullshit about them.

And drtyfrank has posted what you need.

I see this is an old thread, but for those still struggling with this problem, disable automatic update indeed and instead update windows using windizupdate and firefox. No nagging and all the same goodness.

i have the same problem and cause of that i cant download java. i need java to play games and all kinda shit.

i did it once before i was able to mask xp with some program i got from utorrent. its such a hastle i cant deal with doing it again. i had to try every program on utorrent twice to get one that worked.

i also make a thread on the shroomery and still couldnt get it to work.

i could use any help that will get me to be able to download sp2 in order to download java

with windows it is fairly easy too get the updates. without going through the windows site.

I run a beta copy that's faster, less bloated and more stable than
any of the retail versions I've used... only drawback is that I
cant use microsoft messenger... boo hoo
