Censor for the sake of the Muslims, (Fuck You Southpark!)
    #6099895 - 09/25/06 07:35 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Looks like Jesus is fair game, but Muhammad is not.....South Park gets politically correct:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12303873/

NEW YORK - Banned by Comedy Central from showing an image of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the creators of "South Park" skewered their own network for hypocrisy in the cartoon's most recent episode.

The comedy — in an episode aired during Holy Week for Christians — instead featured an image of Jesus Christ defecating on President Bush and the American flag.

In an elaborately constructed two-part episode of their Peabody Award-winning cartoon, "South Park" creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker intended to comment on the controversy created by a Danish newspaper's publishing of caricatures of Muhammad. Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous.

When the cartoons were reprinted in newspapers worldwide in January and February, it sparked a wave of protests primarily in Islamic countries.

Parker and Stone were angered when told by Comedy Central several weeks ago that they could not run an image of Muhammad, according to a person close to the show who didn't want to be identified because of the issue's sensitivity.

The network's decision was made over concerns for public safety, the person said.

Comedy Central said in a statement issued Thursday: "In light of recent world events, we feel we made the right decision." Its executives would not comment further.

As is often the case with Parker and Stone, they built "South Park" around the incident. In Wednesday's episode, the character Kyle is shown trying to persuade a Fox network executive to air an uncensored "Family Guy" even though it had an image of Muhammad.

"Either it's all OK, or none of it is," Kyle said. "Do the right thing."

The executive decides to strike a blow for free speech and agrees to show it. But at the point where Muhammad is to be seen, the screen is filled with the message: "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Muhammad on their network."

It is followed shortly by the images of Christ, Bush and the flag.

A frequent "South Park" critic, William Donohue of the anti-defamation group Catholic League, called on Parker and Stone to resign out of principle for being censored.

"The ultimate hypocrite is not Comedy Central — that's their decision not to show the image of Muhammad or not — it's Parker and Stone," he said. "Like little whores, they'll sit there and grab the bucks. They'll sit there and they'll whine and they'll take their shot at Jesus. That's their stock in trade."

Parker and Stone did not immediately respond to a request through a spokesman for comment.

It's the second run-in over religion in a few months for the satirists. Comedy Central pulled a March rerun of a "South Park" episode that mocked Scientologists. Isaac Hayes, a Scientologist who voiced the Chef character on the show, resigned in protest over the episode.

"South Park" again got the last word last month with an episode where Chef was seemingly killed and mourned as a jolly guy whose brains were scrambled by the "Super Adventure Club," which turns its members into pedophiles.

Only last week, "South Park" won broadcasting's prestigious Peabody. Awards director Horace Newcomb said at the time that by its offensiveness, the show "reminds us of the need for being tolerant."

William Donohue should quit whining like a little bitch with her panties in twist over the creators not being 'fair and balanced,' South Park is an equal opportunity offender. However, you would probably have to watch the show to realize that. Dogmatic automatons might have a hard time doing that if it goes against their programming.

apparently, that was the first episode of South Park he's ever seen. Perhaps he missed the one with the Virgin Mary that bleeds from her ass / vagina all over the pope.

'South Park' Makers Say It's 'Open Season on Jesus,' Not Mohamed
Posted by Tim Graham on September 24, 2006 - 07:27.

ABC's Jake Tapper interviewed Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators of the sleazy cartoon "South Park" for Friday's "Nightline." It's been "vilified as crude, disgusting, and nihilistic." Actually, it may be calmly, dispassionately, almost scientifically described as crude, disgusting, and nihilistic. But Tapper elicited some interesting commentary on how which religions can be mocked:

"That's where we kind of agree with some of the people who've criticized our show," Stone says. "Because it really is open season on Jesus. We can do whatever we want to Jesus, and we have. We've had him say bad words. We've had him shoot a gun. We've had him kill people. We can do whatever we want. But Mohamed, we couldn't just show a simple image."

During the part of the show where Mohamed was to be depicted — benignly, Stone and Parker say — the show ran a black screen that read: "Comedy Central has refused to broadcast an image of Mohamed on their network."

Other networks took a similar course, refusing to air images of Mohamed — even when reporting on the Denmark cartoon riots — claiming they were refraining because they're religiously tolerant, the South Park creators say.

"No you're not," Stone retorts. "You're afraid of getting blown up. That's what you're afraid of. Comedy Central copped to that, you know: 'We're afraid of getting blown up.'"

In fact, as not such a fan of "South Park," I did not know, as it's described here, that the show started as a little Christmas cartoon for an entertainment executive to show his friends featuring Santa Claus and Jesus having a fight. It's also interesting to hear Parker and Stone swear they believe in God, and think atheism is the most ridiculous point of view:

Stone, who was raised Jewish, says he's not religious. Parker says he considers himself religious, but it would take him a long time to explain it. Both say they believe in God.

"I believe there's something going on that we don't know," Parker says. "That's as far as I can go."

"Recently, atheists and people who hate religion have, like, really glommed on to our show because we make fun of a lot of religions," Stone notes. "But neither one of us is anti-religious at all. I mean, I'm fascinated by religion."

"All the religions are superfunny to me," Parker adds. "The story of Jesus makes no sense to me. God sent his only son. Why could God only have one son and why would he have to die? It's just bad writing, really. And it's really terrible in about the second act."

But Parker says atheism is more ludicrous to him than anything else.

"Out of all the ridiculous religion stories — which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous — the silliest one I've ever heard is, 'Yeah, there's this big, giant universe and it's expanding and it's all going to collapse on itself and we're all just here, just 'cuz. Just 'cuz. That to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever," he says. "So I think we have a big atheism show coming."
I'm not convinced after all this talk that you can claim that these men revere anything, including God. They certainly have no fear that God would be displeased with what they do for a living, and that whatever creed is true, they've mocked every version of God, so perhaps they are guaranteed to be on God's bad side regardless of who's right. But there's absolutely no fear of the Lord required to mock the atheists. It would be inconsistent for these all-purpose mockers to leave them out.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
So the Muslim religion is in such disarray right know, that even South Park, would send thousands of them over the edge? Why aren't Christians like this?

It was not their decision to have it censored, they have no power over what the higher ups will allow on their network.

'South Park' Makers Say It's 'Open Season on Jesus,' Not Mohamed

Exactly, they wish it didn't have to be, but in the end they don't say what goes on air.

They do have an older episode where they create a character for mohamed, although I'm not sure if they air it anymore??

Southpark has NEVER been politicaly correct. The network which airs them has, they have not. If anyone that watchs the new mohomed episode can't catch the satire and opposition to the censorship about the whole deal, then they are just dumb.

South Park has been one of the most influential shows, on pushing what can be shown on TV. The point is that this clearly shows a bias from one religion to the next.

Does anyone here find a double standard? What if the tables were turned? That "the powers that be" at Comedy Central would not allow defamation of Jesus, but JUST the defamation of Muhammad?

In any case I will be watching the upcoming interview, to see if the creators of South Park have to say.

Did you actually see this episode? If so, you would be able to see how obvious it is that the two were disgusted at getting their episode censored.

Making fun of Jesus has some comedic merit in how he's portrayed because he was an archetype of kindness. Mohammed was a warlord that sprung a religion. Making fun of him is simply socially dangerous.

It's quite sad that them censoring this episode probably saved human lives. The problem is not with South Park.

My thoughts exactly. This isn't censorship. Censorship is when the government steps in and says "No". This is self censorship by Comedy Central to protect both their assets and any individuals who might be harmed by Islamist asshats.

Jesus is just one part (1 0f 3) of the religion of Christianity. The Old testament is filled with war and genocide.

You are wrong.
Censorship can be done by any individual, organization, or government. I am not saying that Comedy Central HAS to show this. It is their full right not to. However, I disagree with there political correctness on the issue:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship

Political censorship occurs when governments conceal secrets from their citizens. The logic is to prevent the free expression needed to revolt. Democracies do not officially approve of political censorship but often endorse it privately. Any dissent against the government is thought to be a “weakness” for the enemy to exploit. Campaign tactics are also kept secret: see the Watergate scandal.
Religious censorship is the means by which any material objectionable to a certain faith is removed. This often involves a dominant religion forcing limitations on less dominant ones. Alternatively, one religion may shun the works of another when they believe the content is not appropriate for their faith.
Corporate censorship is the process by which editors in corporate media outlets intervene to halt the publishing of information that portrays their business or business partners in a negative light. Privately owned corporations in the business of reporting the news also sometimes refuse to distribute information due to the potential loss of advertiser revenue or shareholder value which adverse publicity may bring.

As far as I'm concerned, only government is capable of censorship in any legal sense. Corporations and organizations practice self censorship, and whatever they censor is within their constituency of privacy, thus it's not worth whining over. It seems you almost WANT South Park to spark wide spread chaos in the third world. Yea, well, you know what? Emberassing Muslim radicals has a price, usually whoever they just killed in the midst of their religio-centric hissy fits. I'm all for pushing the boundaries of social mores in satire and comedy, but when satire has the potential to cause harm to people and property, it loses all redeeming value.
