Quote:
The expected costs are due to peculiarities in the Medicare benefit law that cause a gap in available coverage. Medicare is set to pay 75% of initial drug costs up to $2,250 after a $250 deductible for most seniors. But then the program pays nothing until drug expenses reach $5,100, after which the government pays 95% of all costs.
Which is sad because most people who have to spend that much on prescription drugs ever year are the ones who need it most.
Why not just even out the percent covered, do away with the donut hole and call it a good plan?
Right now about 3 million seniors are having to chose between food and medication. And if they dont buy the medication they will never reach that upper limit where the government begins to pay 95%.

I hope they have an exception for antibiotic treatment. Otherwise it is dumb and dangerous. Infections like TB require you complete the full course of up to 12 months, even though the symptoms disappear early on in the treatment. Otherwise you risk the infection taking hold again, possibly in a more resistant or untreatable from. Which is a major public health issue.

Donut holes....
Everybody wants something for nothing.
Everybody wants somebody else to pay for their medications.
Everybody wants somebody else to pay for their medical care.
Everybody wants somebody else to pay for their retirement.
So much Tax money wasted on Medicare/Medicaid. We should be allowed to privately invest that money. Privatize Medicaid and Medicare.
Give freedom a chance. It works.

Treat the symptom, not the problem? Rather than take medicaid/care away, why not figure out ways to reduce the cost of medicine? Small things such as protection from outrageous lawsuits and capped liability, restrictions in advertising, reduction in patent protections for pharmaceuticals, allowing competition with foreign pharmaceuticals, etc... (more of a brainstorm than a claim that these will fix the problem)
