Compost down the road?
    #609619 - 04/16/02 12:54 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I was wondering if I could use compost that I can buy down the street from me? I walked over and asked the farmer what was in his compost. He told me that it was cow dung, horse dung, hay/straw, and some shavings. I have been reading posts on the boards and I have seen that it should be a certain PH with about 2% nitrogen. What PH? Does it need anything else? Should I find out what they were fed? If it does need somthing can I add it and what should I add?

Bluhoney I have seen that you post some stuff on compost and pro growing teks. I am sure that you could answer this for me. I have only ever used the PF tek and wish to go to a somewhat large scale. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Fronty McNiggs

please answer this for him, I am looking to start several compost piles and want to know what all is required. I bought a bag of composted cow manure, but I don't think that is all/exactly what I want...

Well, the compost doesn?t sound bad, although it?s not the classical mushroom compost.

hispeed67: Read in this link how to make mushroom compost.

You said that the compost dosn't sound bad, Anno. So what could I add or what other information should I find out about this compost? Or if nothing else what should I add to the compost if I can add anything at all?

Conduct a trial by bringing the compost to the target awter content, pasteurising it and inoculating with grain spawn. Then you?ll see if it works or not.

Whatr if I am not using grain? I am using a water culture. So if the compost has to be to a certain water content then should I make it a little less water for the liquid inocc? Maybe should I add some gypsum powder or glycin to the compost and maybe half worm castings? SO MANY QUESTIONS. Sorry.

Thanx,
Fronty

I?m not sure how well a liquid inoculation would work with compost...
