    #609465 - 04/15/02 09:30 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I HAVE A 2 CASING IN STRAIGHT COCO COIR I CASED YESTERDAY. ANYWAYS I HAVE PERLITE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE TERRARIUM and i even have a heating pad underneath the actual terrarium too. I just cannot get a high humidity. I have put blankets over it jsut to get soem heat which might attract some humidity. any suggestions.... maybe its that i have a piece of plexy glass over the top and no an actualy lid or anythign.... could that be the case....

Yo Tex, I want to try to help you but you were kind of vague. Whats your humidity at right now? Did you test the accuracy of your hygrometer? Are you just not seeing condensation? Do you have exhaust vents anywhere? cuz the humidity will leak out there...Are you spraying after you fan?

Plexiglass lid should be alright as long as all of it is pressed down against the tub. Or you could leave a crack for air to vent out if you ever need to decrease humidity.

It takes lots of experimenting to get the right humidity...

Good luck

without knowing all the details of your setup i can give you one reason right off the bat you may be having humity problems. Its the heating pad! My friend ran into a simular problem. The higher temp you have in the terrium the more water vapor the air can hold thus actually decreasing the humity. I know that sounds a bit off but think about it for a sec...100% humity at 65F when raised to 75F is not 100% humity anymore. Try taking the heating pad off and see how thats works for you

Allright well thanks for the comments. I have a lid that goes on the top taht fits pretty good, it isnt clear though, but i didnt think it needed to be till i actually wanted to start pinning. Anyways my actualy humidity like the gauge says is supposely around 50 -52%, but there is condensation along the walls. Also, the heating pad is helping the temp go up. Without the heating pad i have a temp. of around 70 but with it i have a temp around 82 which is what i heard an ideal temp for pre pinning stage. Anyways other suggestions would be nice. Since I am getting condenstaion I am guessing that there is humidity. Suggestions or comments welcome please.

yeah if you have condensation all over the walls then i would say that your ok on humidity...although you may run into the problem down the road with to much humidity. Umm it sounds like your hygrometer is off. Try sticking it in a ziplock bag or something sealable with a some salt in a little container in there. Put about 4 or 5 drops of water on the salt (do not saturate it...you need DAMP salt crystals). Now just seal the container and walk away. Check on it in like 6 hours or so. If its callibrated it should read exactly 75%. If not then its off...either note the devation and make the approrate adjustments in your reading or calibrate it by using the calibration screw in back. Just set it to 75% and then if you want to double check yourself just put it back in the bag and repeat.

82 is a reasonable temp for incubating cakes or casings
but not for pinning.
To induce pinning you need temp drop(at least 10 deg), high
humidity(95%+), light, and air exchange.
You don't need the heat pad. 70 is fine. For humidity you should
probably mist after you fan, until the pinset is established, then
the perlite will probably be enough for fruiting (85%)
Hope that helps.

Allright well I am kind of confused. You say that I should put it at 70 degrees right now. Meaning that I am leaving it at 70 degrees while the mycelium is spreading thhrough the coco coir. And then when there is mycelium on the top I should raise it to 82 degres to get pins and eventually mushrooms. If this is right cool, but if you could explain to me what exactly I should do I would appreciate it. THanks..
