need help

i'm boiling my half pint jars in water to sterilize them. before i do that, do i put tape on the holes in the lids and boil them with the holes covered or not? MMGG says to just put a piece of tin foil over the holes and boil them, but i think that would let all of the water in the substrate evaporate. but if i do tape the holes, will my jars blow up from pressure? somebody please help me out

what I do is 2 layer tin foil (or 1 piece folded in half) over the lid, then the ring over that. Then when I innoculate just pierce with the syringe, then 2 coffie filters and rubber band em on.

keep them covered w/ foil and dont tape them.
nothing substantial will evaporate.
cover the pan with boiling water to keep teh steam in and it will heat your jars more effectively.

I just make lids up with polyfill to vent(poke about 1/4 inch hole and fill with filter floss) and tape over Innoculation holes with masking tape. Then when I want to innoculate jar I just wipe tape with alcohol and stick needle thru it, then put another piece of tape over needle hole and flame needle between holes. I have very few problems with contamination that way
