I didn't get many responses in 'Mushroom cultivation,'

So... let's see if anyone hear has anything to say about this...

Mycelial fermentation

well have you tried the stuff yet? im not sure if the psilocybin would not break down in alcohol, but alot of alkaloids can be extracted with alcohol so you might have something

you should give us a little run down of the process you used, and whether or not the alcohol from it will make you trip. you don't have to give away any mind blowing secrets, but I doubt you'll get too many answers with questions that vague.

Well...

regardless, I have alcohol...

alcohol dehydrogenase... produced not by yeast but by a psychedelic mushroom.

I am also curious as to the composition, other than alcohol, and where to go from here.

Japanese scientists have made wine and saki using "certain genera of mushrooms," yet there is no mention of the Psilocybe genera.

So basically I'm hoping I have just made my first scientific discovery, and hopefully not the last, in unveiling some Psilocybe genera mushrooms' ability to produce alcohol dehydrogenase using readily available house-hold conveniences.

Anyways, documentation on previous efforts to produce alcohol using mushrooms can be found here.

I'll distribute the information freely, as soon as I establish that nobody else has done this, yet... ya dig?

It's pretty simple, really, I was curious to see what would happen if a liquid culture grew in anaerobic conditions.

Needless to say that liquid culture reeks of beer and oozes out c02 when the cap is but barely (emphesize barely) released, indicating a good amount of built-up c02 pressure... more so than would be normally observed.

So, I'm going to write up a tek after some experimentation (which, NO, does not entail me bio-assaying the product. I'm going to see if there's any possibility of getting this strange concoction tested by a gas chromatograph; although that's highly unlikely considering the cost.

All I know is it would make a funny head-line,
"19-year-old kid finds way to make beer from psychedelic mushrooms."

that sounds pretty interesting!

are you in college, if so I'm sure you could take it to a chemistry lab (just make sure it's a friend who works there so they don't narc you) and get all the testing done on it you need.

You're pretty much gonna have to say what you did, its kinda hard to get exactly what you mean.
My guess is that you grew a LC (probably of honey/karo water?) and made sure the lid was air tight, by putting the seal ring on correctly?

As far as I'm aware, few fungi (in the basidiomycota) are capable of anerobic respiration. There are many posts where growth was inhibited by high CO2 levels cause by insufficient air exchange.

My first thought is perhaps a yeast contamination?

Are you sure what has fermented is the mycelium and not the medium?

I think what he means is alcohol production by psilocybe mycelia, just as you make beer by mixing suger and yeast etc. and keeping it airtight to make alcohol through anerobic respiration.

So he's thinking of making "magic mushroom beer" by substituting yeast for mycelia, but I don't think it can work as evidence suggests that psilocybe are obligate aerobes. Still, he does say he made some, so I'm interested to see what he did.

Basically what it all boils down to is a control...

I'm going to do the same exact thing again, minus the mushroom mycelia, to test the possibility of a yeast contamination.

I will test on a number of jars, with differing mediums, as well as testing in the exact circumstances in which this was created.

What I need to know is how tough yeast is... considering the medium in which this occured definitely reached 170 degrees fahrenheit throughout for a good 30+ mins.

The medium was, obviously liquid, so there was definitely an even distribution of that heat through said medium, as well.

I have a mycology class, I'll present this idea to my instructor... get his feedback on the possibility of this species doing this...

It depends on whether or not Psilocybes have that special "archaic" genetic ability to survive anaerobic conditions.

A few things to note, the mycelia (within the medium) grew quite rapidly and there still rests a considerable clump of mycelia, and a lot of outstretched hyphae just swirling around... so I do in fact know the mycelia *DID* grow in anaerobic conditions. And before discovering the jar reeked of something beer-like I had full intentions of trying to use the liquid culture.

Ok, actually referring to it as a "mycology" class may be misleading.

I have two classes WITHIN the field of mycology; Mushroom identification and Mushroom cultivation.

The classes are taught by a mycologist who previous to teaching the classes worked on a farm. The class is not a "mycology" course from which I could hope to eventually derive a degree.

Regardless I can still learn about mycology from these courses. Perhaps you guys should move if you really wish to pursue mycology. I know Universities in the PNW offer such courses.

Hmm, I just had some experience with something quite similar so I thought I would share. Long story short I found a small shaggy mane while foraging and wanted to make a crude inoculum for my yard, so I dropped it in 250ml of LC on Friday. I've stirred it about twice a day, and have been expecting contams since I didn't clean it or anything, but was hoping at least to germinate a bunch of spores and get something going in the yard. Well last night the flask top was fully foamed, and just holding on to the flask you could watch bubbles floating up the sides (without agitation!). I was impressed, and when I dumped the wicked mix into a clean grain jar it smelled somewhat similar to beer. Scary thing is I almost tried a sip, heh.

Now I know my culture must have been contaminated, but there was a lot of fermentation going on and there was a lot of shaggy mane spores dumped into it. I'm curious to hear if you can replicate your results with a known clean culture, because it sounds identical to my situation which easily could have had a yeast contamination.
