Outdoor vs. indoor growing yields...

I was trying to theorize why outdoor growing is superior to indoor in terms of size and yield and ability to deal with contaminants. Below are a few possibilities:

1. Symbiotic micro-organisms not present in cultured mediums.

2. Regular cycling of day / night temperatures and humidity as opposed to fixed conditions. May strengthen the mycelium.

3. Superior air exchange.

4. Perhaps most importantly is the ability to shed waste products into the soil. In an enclosed environment, the mycelial lives with its own waste which is toxic to the organism. (Cake dunking might not only rehydrate a cake, but may purge some waste by-products.)

The better we understand these and other factors, the better we can adapt our indoor cultivation.

First off, I am not of the opinion that some around here are that outdoor growing productes superior fruits. And especially not in terms of size. The controlled, but higher than atmospheric, levels of co2 in a terrerium allow for huge fruits, 18 inches plus. Outdoors this will never happen. The clone of an 18 inch fruit put outdoors will probably grow to about 6-8 inches, maybe even less. I would also venture to say that yield is nowhere close, given the same amount of time and substrate. I think indoors would greatly over-produce outdoors in any experiment, with nearly any varriable isolated.

Contaminants are the big bonus to outdoors. A couple of things here. Fresh Air, thats all there is outside is fresh air. contams don't really love it. Air circulation (different from fresh air, or air exchange), air doesn't sit still outside. If it does in your terrerium, i'd redesign the terrerium Contams don't like moving air. And never underestimate the power of UV light from the sun to keep contams in check.
