Hotel fires, and employees who don't seem to care.

So I woke up this morning and the hotel room was a bit warm. I hadn't looked at the thermostat when I checked in the night before. I got out of bed and looked and the a/c was turned off. So I flip the switch and immediately the air kicks on. Then, about 5 seconds later I hear this awful noise. It was the sound of a serious electrical short, a combination of buzzing and crackling. Next thing I know my room is full of smoke! And its that kind of smoke that is obviously and electrical problem, kinda blue and has that distinct pungent electircal smell of burning wires. So I flip off the a/c, open the window, and start to air out the place while I'm waiting for the smoke alarm to go off. Amazingly, the smoke alarm never sounds and I wait til I'm sure there is no danger of a fire.
So it is time to go to work anyway and I get ready to leave. As I walk out I go to the front desk and relate the story to the guy on duty. I emphasize the fact that this could be a serious problem that should require immediate attention. After all, the whole damn hotel could burn down! He jots down some notes with a disinterested look and I leave.
Fast forward 12 hours...I return from work. I go into the room and the first thing I notice is that the a/c is on but the room is still warm. Upon further inspection I relize that nothing has been done but the maid had flipped on the a/c when she was in the room! Luckily it seems as if the short from earlier has not reappeared. However, I can hear the fan motor in the system straining (but no air blowing out). Its kind of a high-pitched whine over the top of a buzzing noise.
So I flip off the air again and march down to the front desk. I proceed to tell the girl that is working there that somebody better take this shit seriously or they are gonna have a full-fledged fire on their hands soon. Once again, I get the disinterested attitude while she jots down a few notes. She says she will get the engineer on duty to have a look.
About that time a manager happened to be passing through the lobby. So I grab the guy and relate the entire story to him. Then I tell him that somebody better take me seriously here because a fire in a 7-story building is nothing to take lightly! His response..."Oh, sorry for your inconvinence. We'll see what we can do." And he proceeds to give me a ticket for a free drink at the bar!
At this point I am flabbergasted. I just told mamagement of a major hotel that there is a serious threat of a fire in their establishment and I got brushed off with a free drink! I wanted to scream "My inconvinience! How inconvinient will it be for you when your hotel burns down you moron!" But instead I took the drink coupon and walked away. I had my free drink then I went out to dinner. When I got back to my room a couple hours later it was if nothing had happened. The a/c is still fucked up and there has been no attempt made by the management to even place a warning not to use it. I turned it on just to see and it is still making a horrible noise while blowing no air. And I can just about gaurantee that the maid will flip it on again tomorrow.
Y'know, I expected a little more from a nice place like this. Especially in matters that can potentially concern the safety of their guests. But it is as if they just don't give a shit or just don't believe me. Either way I found the whole experience quite disturbing. Maybe I'll call the local fire marshall tomorrow morning and tell him the story! I may not be welcome back here, but do I really want to be?!

I've been living in a hotel for a year now, because I'm too lazy to move, and I've found that whenever I want attention all I have to do is set a fire in my room...
