Any computer literates out there care to take a minute and explain IP's?
    #6084434 - 09/20/06 09:46 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hello.

So I've been trying to figure out IP's and I've searched the net.

I currently have DSL internet, the main wired modem is upstairs on the main house computer, along with the wireless router, and my laptop connects through a built in network card...(i think that makes a difference)

What I've come up with, is that your IP is just like your home address, but online. So when I registered on the shroomery, I got the Email that says someone has registered with the username blah blah at the IP address blah blah...

So, theoretically speaking, since that IP address is stored ( is it?) on the shroomery servers, if some crazy mercinary cop was to hack into the server, or it was confiscated, and they saw a post by me showing a huge grow with me saying I was the cultivator, could they just say alright, heres his IP, call up my ISP, and get my physical address? and bam im busted? is it really that easy?

I searched about IP's and read something about if you have DSL then your IP will change everytime you power down the modem? I don't think that is true for mine because I visit whatismyip.com every few months and its always been the same IP...

Now, if someone verifies the above, that what I said is possible, is it as simple to fix as just buying a membership to something like megaproxy? Would that change the above scenareo to (cops somehow get server information (IF IPs are stored, idk that yet), they see a post by me with pictures showing a 9584 square foot grow with comments from me saying im the cultivator, they look at the IP of the username I made while using megaproxy, call the ISP, megaproxy says sorry thats classified info Mr. Cop, and the cops hit the dead end, never being able to trace the pic to me?) I believe that is just like buying a drop box for the mail.....or is it more complicated than I think....

Also, If the IP of each username is stored on the servers, its only the IP of the computer that was used to register correct? So what about every post I make, is each one tagged with the IP of the computer I am on, or is only the IP used to register stored. So theoretically, I could go to germany, register a username, come back here, and be safe?

Thanks for putting up with my hapless jargon and babbling, I just could not seem to find a laymans terms about IP's and what they have to do with posting on message boards like this one.

An IP is like an address on your house, but for your computer. The IP address will be assigned by your ISP. This assignment can be static or dynamic, again depending upon your ISP. If the address is static, then it never changes. If the address is dynamic, it may change as often as every few hours to as long as every few weeks. However, most ISPs keep logs of what address was assigned to what customer at what time, and can identify what household was using an IP address at a given time. (They usually require a court order before providing this sort of information.)

Most web sites will log the IP address and page visits of the users. These log files tend to grow large quickly, and are often deleted weekly or monthly though it is technically possible to save the logs "forever".

If you wish to protect yourself online, then an anonymous proxy is your best bet. There are free ones and pay ones. Regardless of free or pay, you will slow your connection speed going through a proxy. A proxy is also not 100% secure. The proxy itself must be secure, and the line between you and the proxy must also be secure. Finally, if you are not careful, things like javascript or java applets and active-x can still be used to get a real IP address even if the user is coming through a proxy.

All your computers at home will have a different IP locally, on LAN, but on the internet they will all have the same IP. Each computer will have a unit MAC address (actually not each PC, but each network card).

If anyone somehow gets access to the log files on Shroomery's servers, yes they will know that this IP belongs to that user who wrote that post.

Yes a lot of DSL ISPs provide dynamic IPs. These change every time you sign/log in. However, a log is kept of which customer has which IP at any given time. So even if your IP is different, your ISP still has a record of which account used the suspect IP at which time, and the Shroomery server logs date and time.

I'm not sure how they can get your info from your ISP, but assuming they could, they'll know who you are instantly.

You can hide your IP by using Tor or JAP. Don't use public proxy lists as these are sometimes honey-pots (they are run by feds who keep logs of everyone who uses them and what they're using them for).

I suggest Tor. Your packets will disperse and go through different people before reaching the destination. It's slow (but still faster than JAP) but it's very secure.

You can pay for a private VPN which will also be very secure but you have to find a reputable provider.

Be warned, proxies will usually have a disclaimer which you have to agree to before using. Usually it will state that if you do anything illegal they are free to give your info to authority.

You have to find a trusted provider, preferably overseas.

I'm not sure if they will bother with small drug cases though. They concentrate more on child pornography and money laundering/large sum crime.

Couple of points on IPs and laws.

1. Don't know when shroomery clears logs.  If I'd hazard a guess maybe every month or two, and they may archive logs if they are good admins.

2. Cops generally can't just barge in because of some grow logs you post.  Yes, if you're being stupid, bragging and posting information that would personally identify you, they may take time to do surveilance.  But they would have to get another way to confirm their suspicion.  (Like monitor your house, find someone that would rat you out, find some sort of physical evidence like shroom leavings or materials in your trash.)

Pictures alone will not get you busted.  They are digital photos which will not hold up in court because they could be altered, they could be pictures of a friend's grow, etc, etc...  Also, you can always claim ignorance and say your neighbor was using your wireless connection to submit the photos.

Which brings up another point, if you're worried about posting pics of your grow, make sure you don't do it from your internet connection!  Upload all the grow pics you want from a coffeshop or other wireless connection, send them to a friend to upload, I'm sure you can think of other ways to do so and be safe at the same time!

To summarize:
1. Don't worry too much about posting pics, as long as your grow isn't massive, and has no identifying material in the photo (like a letter with your name on it, a picture of your grinning self in the picture, etc.)

2. If you're worried about sending a pic, find a way to do it from an IP (internet connection) other than your own.

Remember, pics can't put you in jail, but stupidity can

I'd like to expand on a point made above by Seuss.

The java chat client in use on shroomery.org appears to bypass Tor or whatever proxy you point your browser to.

I found/find this to be highly irritating; I clicked on the 'chat' link, and the applet started up without any warning of an impending information leak. Before I knew it, my originating IP address, and the associated user name, was leaked.

Now I will have to set up packet filtering so that I know the only outbound connections are coming from tor. Thanks for blowing away my previous user id, shroomery!

I know some people will think this is overly cautious, but let's face it the impending reign of the thought police is not getting less likely.

You shouldn't be too worried about being busted for posting questionable material online. The relevant authorities basically require a subpoena to get hold of your personal details from an ISP. Having worked for an ISP, I've only ever seen 3 or 4 in as many years. Your ISP being hacked and having the details stolen is quite unlikely and would not be admissible in court anyway.
