King Bolete or Close Relative?
    #6082784 - 09/20/06 03:30 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I think I might have a king or close relative here. Habitat was in a woody neighborhood where A. Muscaria are growing as well, which I've read is an indicator. No spore print yet. The smell is really good to me. Very meaty looking. Growing in grass about two feet from a stump. Here are the pics.

It's similar in appearance, although the cap seems small and the stem large. Which state are you in?

Happy mushrooming!

Hey, the cap is broken in half for one, and secondly I think I picked this mushroom prematurely out of excitement. There is a second smaller specimen still growing in the same spot in my neighborhood. I am in southern Indiana. Could it be a queen bolete as referred to in Mushrooms Demystified?

There are several species it could be.

As far as edibility, that's relatively easy. The tubes are not orange or red, and it does not bruise blue, so it's not poisonous. The only test left is to take a tiny piece and taste it to see if it's bitter or peppery. If it's not bitter or peppery, then it's edible. As to how good an edible, that's a matter of personal preference for any edible mushroom.

Happy mushrooming!

How would you suggest I get this ID'd specifically, if I were to go that far?

Hi, you will want to take a spore print. This is done by laying the cap of the mushroom pore side down on a pieve of paper and leaving it there over night, or at least 6 hrs. Don't fool around with it while it is printing. Just leave it alone.

Also, if you chew a small piece of the mushroom, then spit it out, you may be able to tell if it is an edible species. Remember to spit everything out! The flavour will be decidedly "mushroomy" for the edible boletes, If it is bitter, it is poisonous.

Damn, I'm getting slow.

Oh, and forgot "peppery"!  Thanks as usual Toxicman.

Thanks. I'm pretty well versed in basic IDing, spore printing, gill spacing, etc. I'm just having an especially hard time with boletes. I will definately test for bitterness on this specimen.
