side pinning even though I wrapped in foil and duct tape...

I got pinning on the sides and undersides of my casing trays even though I had them covered in foil and the foil was wrapped in tape. This was during my first ever casing. I used rye berries for the substrate and ended up with a horrible first flush (I have determined the cause of this was the fact that I only had a half inch substrate layer.) My casing was a 50/50 Peat-Verm layer about a quarter inch. I only yielded about 6 grams of dried through 2 flushes (on one small casing, I had two originally but I found green penicillin mold forming on top of the other one and ditched it). My second flush was starting to look good because (after an 8 hour dunk in the sink with tiny water flow from tap) I had a couple of little dudes that were much bigger than anything I picked from the first one. But, the dudes began to stunt after a few days and I went to go pull the tray out of my FC (just a 58qt sterlite w/1" damp perlite on bottom and not much FAE except for my fanning and misting 4+ times a day) and when I pulled out my tray the foil wrapping came off of one corner exposing a HELL of a lot of side pinning. I went ahead and pulled off the rest of the foil only to find that little clumps of white balls of myc with a light green colored center on each one, about four growths in all. I had eaten a few dudes already the night before, so I consider myself lucky that I didn't get sick at all. The few little dudes I still have (dried and frozen) appear to be quite non-contaminated. Not only did I not get sick from either time of eating these guys, I also had VERY pleasant dreams both times. Any reason why my casing would side(and under) pin with no exposure to light?

You only need tiny bit of light to trigger pinning. Try starting with opaque container for your casing. I'm not sure why you chose aluminum/duct tape over opaque container to start, but I'd shy away from the shiny stuff. Also, you don't need to use a huge light source which can bounce around light forever, especially against shiny aluminum. I use 5w light bulbs for my light source.

My containers were non-opaque glad. Hence, I covered them in foil and secured the foil with tape. I think you just helped me answer my own question, though. My sterlite container is translucent on the sides, but the lid is opaque white. I did not cut a hole in the top of my sterlite and put a piece of plexi-glass in its place, so the ONLY light getting into the FC was coming in from the sides! Maybe because the only source of light came from the sides of the FC, that contributed to my casing side-pinning. But, why was the bottom covered in pins, too?

Casing shouldn't be effected by perlite at all. Here's a question? How did you find side pinning during the growth anyways? I don't ever take the casing out of the container? Is the bottom of the casing container left semi-transparent? Normally, only time I see anything happening on bottom is when I'm ready to throw out the casing after second flush.

Wrapping a tray with foil will encourage side and bottom pinning. The reason is that light hits the foil above the substrate level and is then reflected down the gap between the foil and the container.
I deliberately triggered this massive invitro flush by wrapping the jar with foil. The other major cause of side and bottom pinning is drilling drainage holes in the bottom of a tray, which lets air exchange down there instead of the top, thus triggering pins. RR

...why exactly did you trigger that flush?
(experimental? or did you remove the mass from the jar after?)

I had previously noted that wrapping a clear fruiting tray with foil delivered tons of pins on the bottom and sides-much more than would have developed had it been left unwrapped.
The jar was an experiment, but also a good natured contest with a fellow grower to see who could deliver the most eye candy in an invitro grow. I won. RR

i have wraped my trays in alum foil. But the reasons i did that and did not attach it to the tub itself.
1.) foil sticks to the substrate, and will shrink with it.
2.) i use'd thick stuff... totally keeps light out.
i do understand where your comming from, with the gaps and side pinning. Makes alot of sence.
