After coming home with a fresh batch of mushrooms i set them out to dry on a towel in my closet as i was taking spore prints. i left the room settle for the night and awoke in the morning to see tiny black bugs devouring my destined meal! how do i stop this from happening again or any other information about bugs would be great.

wild mushrooms are buggy.
you gotta dry them, and that dries out the bugs and they die.
or you could boil them and make tea.
or just eat the bugs, lol, but watch out for the ones that eat your brain.

When I used to hunt I would use a dehydrator to dry them if I wasn't eating them right away cause they get maggots and other bug eggs that hatch fast and eat your fungi. Once I had a bunch of shrooms and ate some. Came back a few hours later to eat some more and was tripping ballz and there were maggots all over my shrooms. Not good anytime but especially not when I'm tripping.

I just don't pick infested specimens... seems to be the best approach.

It is often difficult to tell, as the bugs lay eggs between the gills.

well there was atleast 100 of them, so it was hard to inspect them all but we washed them off, its still one of my first hunts but i just love being in the woods. i wasn't positive if they were the right species but most of the critera matched and the spore prints did too but by time i got o look at them they were all mush..thanks for the dehydrator tip though i think i'll try that. they're was still a few left where i found themn, any chance they could grow back? im pretty sure it was panaeolus subbalteatus.

Would washing the gills of the mushrooms get the bugs out? or would the eggs still stick.

there are ALWAYS tiny microbes and bugs on wild shrooms even if they don't look infected
and trying to wash them isn't going to get them all either
i'll tell you how to make Shroom tea the right way, and how to "wash shrooms"
first boil water, toss the shrooms in there, for about 2 minutes, stirring it up vigorously, then strain it- throw that water away.
this cleans off all the bitter spores and bugs and grass and everything and it doesn't really leech the psilocybin out. then when you make your tea, it's clean and good.
mushrooms only take 24 hours to dry if you spread them out in front of a fan- no heat.
anytime you pick wild shrooms and dry them in front of a fan the next day, you notice all these dead bugs that's life
some people make up some stories about some heart worms and stuff, or fresh wild shrooms can carry who knows what kinda germs and stuff. that's the wilderness. it's kinda gross, but i'll admit i've eaten lots of bugs yea, lol when i was younger
