Soaked WBS smells like vomit?

I'm not kidding - the smell almost made me lose it when it hit me. It was soaked for about 36 hours (thanks to getting called in to work on an emergency, I couldn't clean it up earlier). I used Pennington brand bird food from wally world. The top was all frothy (so I'm gussing it was fermenting), but I don't think I've ever experienced a smell like that before.
Ugggh.

I've used rye after a long soak, and it also stinks to high heaven, but still works fine. RR

Mine WBS smelled pretty bad but I figured it's nothing too bad. I also soaked the WBS for about 35 hrs. I wonder what made yours smell so bad?
Peace,

that is common.
it is bacteria that you smell.
ripe for the killing now in the PC.
I agree that RYE smells worse than WBS after so long. both are terrible
just rinse very well and continue on.
it'll work just fine.

Okie. I trashed the last batch when I realized that somehow our colander has gone missing in the kitchen
I'll make up some more tomorrow hopefully. I couldn't leave that stuff sitting around much more. I have a strong stomach but damn - something about that smell just got to me I'll have to pick up some vicks for next time too, or some cheap cologne.
Can ya tell i'm not used to working with WBS?

You really only need to soak for a few hours. As long as the kernels get softened up slowly, they won't burst when you simmer.
Soaking to germinate endospores is really only necessary with popcorn, which sucks as a spawn material anyway. RR

It's usually due to Lactobacillus living on the grains. During the long soak their numbers exponentially increase.

I must have gotten use to the rye smell quickly because it has NEVER been anywhere the level of disgust you guys speak of.. when I soak rye, it smells like nothing, only if I put my nose real close is the only way I can smell it in the PC it smells, but I think pasteurizing Hpoo is a million times worse
I do usually smoke a bowl during PC tho! but still... I just got done PC'ing 8 1/2 gallon jars
millet smells noticeably less then rye IME

Maybe it is just me but on a scale to 1 to 10 (ten being the worse smell)
Pasteurizing Hpoo - 0 - 1 (I actually like the earthy smell)
Soaking rye - 8 - 9 (Only thing worse is the smell of death....)
Soaking WBS - 3, 4 when in the PC
That is all MOP

If horse manure has any odor at all, it isn't ready to use. Leave it outside in the sun until there's no stink whatsoever. I have a 30 gallon tote of horse manure sitting in my living room waiting for use, and there is zero smell.
As I said above, it isn't necessary to use long soak times with rye or wbs. If rye is used/PC'd before it starts to ferment, I actually like the scent. RR
