DNA data Regarding blue Meanie and Pluteus,
    #6076003 - 09/18/06 09:20 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

Blue Meanie and Pluteus, this is kinda in response to the post earlier on DNA sequencing and your ionterest is such.

AS I noted I was iun Thailand and not available to my files.

I have noticed a strange trend in the real interest of DNA sequencing which differes form whaqt you and I are interested in.

I have in my files numerouos papers on the DNA opf magic mushrooms, those containing tryptamines such as psilocine and/or psilocybine.

While out interest lies in the gathering of DNA for studying their pathways and beginnings and in learning where they are heading, compatibility with others in similar genera/s wetc, I am finding that nmost present pubishing on the DNA of hallucinogenic mushrooms is currently being conducted in the highest interest amongst law enforcement groups intending on using such sequencing as evidence in criminal trials to be used to identify and convict people for possession and or manufacture of psilcibian fungi. This I find discouraging as far as identification goes, showing that law enforcement are ignorant of macroscopic images of these mushrooms and are not qualified to id thenm for courts without proper mycological studidys in the backgeround or education.

I note here three examples of such dna PAPERS USED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT PURPOSES REGARDING PSILOCYBIAN mushrooms.

Excuse my typing I am without glasses,.

Here are three particular papers amongst several from my files in that regard,

From Japan:

Two from Scotland by the same authors and also regarding police use of this DNA to put people in Jail for having or possessing magic shrooms,. Great use for DNA sequencing for arresting people for doing what should be their right to life liberty and the pursuit of shroominess

I would like to point out that in one of the tests for these species, seveeral of the species are not psilocybian mushrooms but do contain trptamines which are not actie, So this in a way can hinder identification of hallucinogenic psilocybes by assuming that if they identify the mushrooms byu using DNA sequcing in the genera Psilocybe then they would soon be sending people to jail for possessing no-active psilocybian mushrooms. Find the papers and read them. there are many more similar to this.

So I again do not like this use of the dna to put people in hjail for shrooms.

Finally here is my DNA sequencing of Copelandia (Panaeolus) cambodginiensis

I left out the methodology and other data pertaining to methods employed in the sequencing because it has to be in the finished paper.

have a shroomy day. Am to busy to really get into this matter as it really is not my field. I am only new to these processes,. and am learning.

mj

seems kind of expensive to test using dna sequencing... isnt there a much cheaper and easier way?

From what I can see these papers are only useful for distinguishing between the genus Psilocybe and Panaeolus. I cant really see why this would be very useful, as its primarily the chemicals they are looking for. I think they do this by gas chromatography.

I think you would have a good opportuinty to question the evidence they found anyway. You say its discouraging, I'd say its a positive if the law cant tell the difference between species. More chances to call them on it and more chance of being let off. If you get caught with powdered shrooms chances are its not gonna be an inactive panaeolus. so the odds of someone getting convicted incorrectly are pretty low.
I think these tests are only to provide clues as to what someone has in their possesion, I doubt that this evidence would be used in court. The gas chromatography is what they do that with.

MJ this is along the lines of what my project is going to be covering,  (restless this process is actually very cheap compared to most things)
I might be able to follow their technique.

I see your point, but I dont think that should automatically make you resistant to people like Pluteus doing it for the cyanescens family to determine specification.
