Way too confused!
    #607334 - 04/13/02 02:00 PM (21 years, 11 months ago)

I've engulfed myself in so much info i can't make up my mind. I'm going with the 50/50+ tek but im unclear on things. I'm using bread pans but whats a good size to go with? I have 9"Lx5"Wx2.5deep or 8"Lx4"Wx2"deep. Also i want to clarfiy the procedure. So basicly i make the 50/50+ and sandwich the substrate layer inbetween it? I've seen that some people just put plain verm. on the bottom then the substrate then the 50/50+. I'm planning on using 2 1/2 pint jars per bread pan.

50/50+ -> substrate layer -> 50/50+ or
verm.-> substrate layer -> 50/50+

sorry for the basic questions..ive read too much and my head is plugged

sounds like you got yourself a winner-those will be very thick pans of casing-
i use verm on bottom 50/50 on top-i have great results with this-
after my first flush,i put a light layer of verm over top of casing for extra support,the 2nd and 3rd flush seem to get much larger than the first flush,and the extra support is needed-my babiesd always fall over on the 2nd and 3rd flush-i am going to add some oyster next time-maybe this will help-either way,they still do the job :wink:

i put about 1/2 inch verm down,maybe a little less,then i slice my cakes,in about 1/2 inch slices-cover the bottom layer with these-then i crumble some of a cake to fill in any spaces-then i put about 1/2-3/4 inch 50/50
cover and then wait at room temp-if i see any early spots i patch them-until i see about 3 or 4 different spots showing in different places-then i birth it into my terrarium-mist it if its dry-
i always get an even pinset this way and have great results-
i started out using ez foil loaf pans-
now i am trying out e z foil turkey baking pans for huge casings-

i was unhappy with a 2" substrate layer, so i got deeper pans. try it out and see how it goes though.

Well... swid is a newbie himself but has noticed a few thing about casings that he has incubating. For some he crushed the cakes and then cased them, but for the last 2 casings he simply put full cakes in the bottom of the baking dish whole- and then cased. He has noticed a way faster colonization of the casing layer and it seems much more rhizomorphic. None of these have fruited yet but I expect that the whole cake ones will do better.

I would go with a deeper substrate...
