Various mushrooms from a recent hunt In michigan
    #6065051 - 09/15/06 03:02 PM (17 years, 6 months ago)

I went on another hunt here in michigan with no actives. I found some interesting mushrooms though. Here they are with the best descriptions I can provide since I didn't accuatually collect any of these mushrooms.

Three different species are displayed here.

Species #1:

They looked interesting so I figured I would ask what they where!

Habitat: Rotting Leaf material and off from a tree
Gills: No Gills
Stem: No Stem

Cap: Very slimy.
Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in Mid-Michigan

Species #2:
These's mushrooms where everywhere. I probably seen a couple hundred of them during the hunt!

Habitat: Rotting Leaf material and off from a tree
Gills: White with a ring I guess that's what you call it
Stem: White to tanish
Cap: orange to cream color. Slimey in some specimans smooth in others
Bruising: Light brown

Location: Picked in Mid-Michigan

Species #3:
Almost thought I found something good untell they didn't bruise blue. I am interested in what they are so I figured I would ask.

Habitat: growing from dirt in muddy dried up swamp
Gills: completey black (it does have gills not pores the picture is blurry. Not inky caps the gills where not inky.
Stem: Whitish
Cap: Brownish
Bruising: Light brown to reddish, on one spot of the mcealium(I killed the spelling) there was a blue tint.

Location: Picked in Mid-Michigan

I know I should have brought them all home for a print so you guys could Identify them but I didn't have anything to collect them in. If I can't get an accurate Id I understand.

Nobody even has any suggestions. I guess without a print my chances are slim.

Being in Michigan, your chances for finding actives are really slim, especially if you are just going around looking for mushrooms and hoping you find an acitve.

I suggest you do some research on what grows in your area before you spend time and effort looking for things, unless you simply have a genuine intrest in mycology.

The faq at the top of the forum is a great place to start, and I suggest using the search bar at the bottom to pull up old threads and what not.

Do a search for honey mushroom, for the second mushroom.

The third mushroom seems to be in the genus psathyrella.

These are just guesses without a spore print.

I knew they weren't active. I was just interested in what species they actually were. If I had any suspicion they were active I would have grabed them. I was out with intentions to find the bluefoot or some gyms. Michigan does suck bad, I've looked all season with no luck for any actives but i haven't lost hope yet. Throughout my many hunting trips looking for actives I've began to grow in interest in indentifing other mushrooms. The slimly ball one was the weirdest mushroom I have every seen so i figured I would post it for everyone to see.

Honey mushroom for sure on the second one. I looked them up and remember all of the features they spoke of. Habitat also fits. Ever ate any? Do they taste good? I am thinking about going back and getting some, there listed as edible. I would make a positive Id first of course.

Did a little research. Looks like the first species I listed is Tremella foliacea .

That is a large Tremella foliacea.

I have eaten the honey mushrooms and I like them. They are good in stews. When you first eat them only eat a little bit some people are said to be allergic.

The first one looks much like Sparassis crispa.
It might be worth looking into.
The one growing on the log looks to be a different species to my eye, your assertion of Tremella seems good at first glance.
Look up the genera of Sparassi and Tremella in your copy of Mushrooms Demystified or mushroomexpert.com
Spore print the stereotypical mushroom shaped cap and stem varieties. It is easy and fun!

Be sure to cook the Honey mushrooms before you eat them, and then only eat a small amount at first, to see how you stomach it.

georgeM, why would you say Sparassi crispa?? The colour is all off, though that is only the most evident dissimilarity..

I can't tell beyond certainty from the picture alone however what leads me to suggest Sparassis is the appearance at the base of what looks to be a living tree (species of which i can't tell) and the large size. There is another species of Sparassis which occurs with hard woods.
Just something worth further investigation in my opinion.
