Complete colonization of cakes
    #606300 - 04/12/02 12:57 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Whenever i crumble my cakes up for casings, the insides are generally more of a dull verm color than the bright white i see on the outside. the outsides are totally covered in the white goodness. is the inside supposed to be as obviously coonized?

Also, if someone would please tell me how much substrate would be a good amount to put in a 8 X 8 baking pan.

Thanks in advance.

How long did you leave them in the jars after they were fully colonized?

the outside of the cake has the chance for mycelium to grow over it which is why it's whiter than the inside with your substrate and verm.

for an 8 x 8 tray i'd use at least 3 jars.

i generally wait until there is no uncovered verm left showing (aside from the occasional straggler pieces that never seem to turn) and then give them another week or a little under until birthday. i generally do not really make note of elapsed days or anything like that. just eyeball it. when using diff. substrates and diff syringes (spores, honey water, etc.) that seems like the best policy. i guess i just worry because casing teks have pictures with these bright white chunks all the way through and i was wondering if i am not waiting long enough.
