Easy sterilization w/o plastic lids?

I don't feel like ordering plastic lids, but I'm considering trying this so i can use my microwave to sterlize instead of a pressure cooker (which i don't have). I've not grown yet (still waiting for a print now) and while i know it's really stupid to innovate where you're not supposed to, I figured I'd just post this because i thought of it and it could work. Basically, toss your substrate in your jars, cover them with plastic wrap, boil the metal lid-rings in some water to sterilize. Put some tape around the bottom of the plastic wrap, poke a hole in the top microwave 8 minutes on high. Let the lid-rings and the jars cool, screw your lid rings on right over the plastic wrap, innoculate via the small hole you poke for microwaving, tape the hole shut. Think this would work, or will microwaving substrate cook the hell out of it? I'm especially curious as to the effects of a microwave on birdseed and whole rice grains. Anybody tried microwave sterlizing either of those?

i tried something sort of similar just two days ago. i read somewhere that while preparing the sterile environment you can microwave all the vermiculite you're about to use. i mixed the brf and vermiculite together and put them into the microwave. not two minutes later the whole things was a nasty charred smoking pile that smelled sort of like burnt popcorn. so if you decide to try this, be careful. you could possibly start something on fire, or just stink up your house.

Ball brand plastic lids are available at many stores that carry canning supplies & under $3 for a box of 8. In the Pacific NW, Fred Meyers carries them. Ace hardware & True Value usualy have them. Anything is better than nothing -- when it comes to sterilization. However, anything short of sterilization with a PC is not sterilization. So, it is lacking & leads to many failures from contamination. You can find a used PC @ thrift stores, second hand stores & on ebay, cheap. Not using a PC, is like not using a condom with a some swinging crazy girl you picked up in a strange bar for a one night stand when you had your #25 beer googles on. You take your chances. Shit happens. SixTango -- out
