First Time Grower - Questions, Grow Log, Pics

Well This is my first grow ever. I've read all the teks, read numerous forums, and have finally decided to cultivate. I purchased some "long grain brown rice" and a hygrometer/thermometer. I could not find vermiculite in any of the stores in the plaza so it'll have to wait for now. I bought 12 wide mouth pint sized jars. I was wondering what the pros and cons of jar size are? Do the jars have to be half pint to do the pf-tek? I'm also looking for a very easy starting strain off spores101. Since it's my first grow I'm gonna try out with cakes. I watched this helpful little film on google video that was pretty impressive taking you through the steps. I'll have some real photos going once i have the operation kickin'.

You know that your rice will have to be ground to flour before you use it right?

Larger jars equal more time and more fruit.

I have used equador and golden teacher all through my experience and they have treated me well.

i say go with ralphsters instead of spores101. free syringe with every purchase, just ask for the strain of the month. plus ralphster is a badass.

Yeah i know that the it has to be rice flour. I'm going to use a coffee grinder to make it into flour. And use bottled water for the mixture.

Ecuador does look tasty. At Ralphsters, all i have to do is ask for the strain of the month and i will get it?

I also downloaded mushroom growing made easy, but the dvd rip from torrentspy. It covers the basics, but there are a few things you will discover to be lacking in coverage when your process actually beings. Fwiw, I also used pint size jars and am having no issue but you see both used on this forum frequently. I suppose it is a matter of preference after running a couple of batches.

Nonetheless, one of the shortcomings of the video is the lack of any reference to more advanced techniques for incubation, specifically the double-tub. You should check out the process outlined in this tek: http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/26177

I had been waiting four weeks and mine were only half colonized, they've been in a good incubator for 24 hours and there is a very obvious increase in production rates. Well worth the time and investment.

Edit: I also used Verm/BRF mixture - but be wary of the ratio listed in the chart graphic on their substrate section. I found it to be a little on the shy side for BRF and Distilled Water. Although mine worked using their method, part of the reason they could have taken so long aside from temp. conditions is they were too dry to begin with. I've seen it recommended that you mix enough water in to a damp consistency, but you'll have to experiment.

I bought some vermiculite and I'm ready to order my syringes. I was wondering if two syringes would be enough to colonize 12 pints? How many cc's of spore should be injected into each jar/hole? I'm probably going to case them in a fruiting chamber. Or I was wondering If this method could be done in a smaller bin.

That is called a mono-tub, little advanced for a first timer.

I would say get two syringe and out about 1/2-1 cc in each jar.

Always keep some spore solution, after you get a little more experienced look into making a Liquid culture.

I'm probably going to stick with the casing then in that case, i don't wanna make this first grow to complex. I do not own a pressure cooker and I was planning to steam them. I've read forums that say to put a towel at the bottom of the pot so the jars don't shake or crack. Does the water in the pot cause the towel not to burn to the bottom? I can maybe obtain a pressure cooker but I'd rather not hassle. I've got huge pots with covers already and heard of success with this method.

PF tek requires no PCer. As far as casing goes, pasteurize it.

Good news I just got a pressure cooker! It only fits 4 pints though. I also sent away for my syringes today. I was wondering if the holes should be poked in the lids before cooking or after. Also if the lids should be facing upside down? I'm going to pressure cook them and store them until I get the syringes.

Make the holes in the lids before and put a square piece of aluminum foil on the lid before screwing it on so water droplets dont get into the jar.

wow dave, if you have read numerous teks and threads, then you're still a dumb ass...

i get to be a shroomery dick to you cuz i have had mad success and i talk to u a lot...

if u read mad teks, then you would've known pint jars take longer but u can use them, and u would know that the water content has to be good and healthy for them to colonize all the way to the middle. you'd also know that the dunk and roll tek would be best for cakes, or just covering them in wet verm while keeping a good 90-95% humidity and a good 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit in the fruiting chamber on a nice solid 12/12 8 of/16 on lighting cycle (the longer on at first until pinning might help induce pinning quicker. excessive fresh air exchange is vital and better for triggering pinning quicker and developing healthy fruits as long as u maintain the humidity. also u want to maintain a solid 84 degrees during incubation so that when u drop the temp 10 degrees in the fruiting chamber.

the lids obviously go on the way they come in the package fancy pants !! :bored:  :tongue:  :foreheadslap:  :doublefu:  :confused:  :imslow:  :lol:  :hotidea:

you suck for buying a pressure cooker that only holds 4 pints at a time when you could've bought my pressure cooker that holds up to 9 quarts at a time....cuz i cant use it anymore :hissyfit:  :cuss:

you should use the tyvek/polyfil combo on your lids cuz it allows for gas exchange as well as acting as a self healing injection site.

i'd recommend returning the pints, or just buy 10 quarts, and return the pressure cooker if possible and buy mine. do 9 quarts of birdseed, spawn all to a bit 60 gallon tub of pasteurized horse poopies cased with 30/30/30 coir,verm,peat and buffer casing layer when ready, hook a big old fishtank air pump into it by poking perfect size holes for the tubing in the side of the bin, mist regularly and light creatively but correctly, and you'll get awesome potent huge fruits... but that might be a bit much for you to handle first time..fancy pantz

so what i'll tell you to do instead of being an actual shroomery dick and be helpful is...

make up the pf tek mix of brf/verm/water  (shit i cant remember the ratio cuz ive done so much bulk spawning instead cuz its way better... what is it 1part water,1partbrf/2 parts verm?) make up 8 pints of mix, add the quarter inch dry layer of verm on top of the mix in the jars, tamp lightly to even the mix, but do not pack the jars tight! pc them with the tyvek polyfill combo lids for 60 minutes at 15 psi (timed once it reaches 15 psi!!!!) with tinfoil covering the lids to help prevent water loss, also a good way to help prevent water loss is to let it boil with the valve open for like 3-5 mins so steam builds up inside. let them cool over night do night force cooling or else they will fuck up and crack and not cool the mix right, but get them out of the pc as soon as you can, you can release the pressure slowly to speed this up. shoot up the jars sterilyly (did i invent a word) and make sure u know how to do that i wont explain that shit. do like .25-.5 cc in each corner of the jar and if u have spores to waste you can speed up the center colonization by adding a 5th shot down the center.  incubate them at 84 til done in DARKNESS DON'T CHECK THEM EVERY 10 MINUTES LIKE AN ADDICT LIKE ME cuz that will slow shit down wayyyy alot.... when the mycelium has spread through  all the sides wait an extra 5 days to ensure the center has colonized, maybe less if u use a fast good colonizer like SA.  when they're done fruit 4 as cakes, break up two as a casing with 50/50 verm coir. spawn the other 2 to poop if you can otherwise case them too. then see if u like casing or cakes better. and remember look up how to dunk and roll your cakes. enjoy!

sorry if i was too much of a dick. but you should read more, i cant emphasize that on enough. but i should be more forgiving cuz i was once a naive newb too, we all were...except i think ol' G's like agar who went straight to bulk..i think..sorry if im wrong man..and if you don't remember me :wink:

i also can't grow for legal reasons. im in mad shit so don't be stupid tell no ONE AT ALL!! im jus a tad bit jealous....i also haven't been on the forums much for a while cuz im a crazy fuck and have almost died a lot of times lately and went homeless for a while... im smart enough to know how to produce mad awesome fruits but not smart enough to know how to keep my mouth shut.

I got my syringes in the mail yesterday, hooray! Ralph was kind enough to throw in the strain of the month free "south American" and i bought some "golden teacher".


I just mixed up my substrate and pressure cooked my jars. I ground up my brown rice into flower and mixed in some vermiculite according to the recipe in the "Simple Cubensis Growing Technique". There was enough for 7 jars but i only cooked 4 of them today. Their cooling over night and plan to inoculate golden teacher tomorrow morning.  :thumbup:

Mycelium growth!!! I inoculated golden teacher about 3 days ago and I'm already seeing nice growth. I had one problem during inoculation though. I accidentally used a whole syringe for 4 jars! :eek: I guess they'll just colonize faster. :grin: I'll try to get some pics up soon. They're at about 80 degrees in a shoebox inside a trash bag.

3 days man  :rolleyes: Growing shrooms is way faster than pot. I checked it in the morning, then took that pic at night and it seriously grew in that time period. I can't wait to check it out tomorrow.

Well I basically have them inside a shoebox which is in a trash bag. Then like a foot and a half away I have a space heater pointed at them set to the lowest setting (50?) because it gets very hot. The thermometer inside the shoebox says their at 80 degrees every time i check up on them.

Well My jars are colonizing nicely.



The only problem is that the bottoms haven't colonized yet.



Can I case a couple in this stage and wait for the other ones to finish to birth them as cakes?

You can but it's not a good idea. Uncolonized cakes carry a high risk of getting contaminated if taken out of the jars. You can probably cut off the uncolonized part and use the rest, but it's best to just wait.

I don't know if you've already been doing this, but when the mycelium is starting to move in on the bottom, you should keep the jars upside down to speed up the process.

The cakes are finally ready and anxious to get out of their jars. As an experiment, i only fruited two of them and set them up as cake form. The rest are still in their jars, but if these two come out well, they'll be out soon. I'm gonna case two of em and i'm going to use peatmoss and vermiculite as mix. Only a little bit longer to wait :cheers:

The cakes are are looking good. But the temps aren't quite right. Is there anything i should be worried about? I want the rest of my cakes to do well. These are the Guinea pigs.  :cool:

I cased one jar into two small bread tins. The mix was 50/50 vermiculite and peat moss. This is only my test run but I'm having a problem with temperatures. Where can i get a nice heater to make it warmer/ more humid?
