Why Would This Happen?
    #6057862 - 09/13/06 06:58 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

I had about 9 shrooms grow out of a BRF cake and then they stopped so I dunked them and now shrooms seem to be only growing our of the mycelium. And there s very very little mycelium on the vermiculite.

Any thoughts?

They should be growing out of the mycelium.  The mycelium is the network of fungus that the fruitbody (mushroom) grows out of.  After you dunked them, you should have rolled them in dry vermiculite, (maybe give it a light misting if it appears that the verm is really dry) then just do what you did the first time and produce another flush

So when you flush you are literally fllushing the old verm off of the cake and then dunking it in water and then preparing a fresh case and then recase? I've been wondering about that.

no...after the first pinset, or even during hyphal formation the mycelium switches from vegetative state to fruiting state. once fruiting is initiated it wont go back to vegetative. so flushes are simply picking the current mature mushrooms from the cake. adding vermiculite after the first flush aids in water retention but when you dunk you dont wash the old verm off like you said.

A "flush" is merely a cluster of mushrooms that grow to the point where you want to "harvest" them. Vermiculite and the process of dunk'n'rolling have very little to do with what a "flush" is.

I think the topic was slightly misplaced. Let me clarify, hopefully with photos. I had one cake that did not have a very good first flush so I dunked it and then still nothing. Later I noticed that the pining was forming on the bottom of the cake where there was vermiculite and not much mycelium. Then I cut it in half vertically one half to spawn and the other to grow.

Now I have a one bogus shroom on the actual cake with mycelium that does not want to grow. While the others want to grow mainly on the vermiculite???

There is probably more moisture in that spot. Vermiculite is not necessary to fruit, but it does make a good micro environment for pins. It holds moisture.

Try adjusting some of these factors in your grow.
Pinning triggers.
1) 10 degree drop in temp (86F to 76F).
2) FAE (free air exchange); increase O2, decrease CO2.
3) light (not too much, if you can see them they're fine).
4) water (misting).
5) transpiration (evaporation).

Have I not already cold shocked them enough when I dunked for 12 hours ?

Also I have an air filter with a bubble curtain under my perlite for air exchange/humidity control. I have the right sized holes at the top for ventilation. I heard that you do not need to mist when you use an air bubbler? But I still spray them once daily or if they look dry.

My only problem may be my fluorescent light. It is kinda bright and only about 2 feet from the cakes. Although the temperature is always around 80 degrees and humidity from 90-100 %

Sounds like you have a good setup. Below are my 2ยข.

Cold shock is not what it sound like. Its not putting the cake in the fridge. It is simply lowering the temp by 10 degrees to induce pins (species specific).

Get rid of the light. You don't need bright. All you really need is the ambient light in the room.

80 degrees is too hot. Try to get it down to like 75. One reason is that mycelium likes to eat at higher temps and fruit at lower ones. Another is too much evaporation caused by the close proximity of the light.

Evaporation is good as long as there is water to evaporate. A good way to do it is to mist then fan. Hyphae says, "fanning... creates nice flushes and large shrooms." Check out his post on pinning. Its a must read for all of us.
